About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow (Level B) or Senior Research Fellow (Level C) to join the Queensland Digital Health Centre and contribute to the NASCENT program—Australia’s national infrastructure for real-time clinical AI trials.

In this role, you will lead the design, development, and deployment of a real-time clinical AI evaluation platform across Australia, while building your research profile in machine learning with transformative healthcare applications.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research:

  • Infrastructure Design & Implementation: Lead architecture, development, testing, and support of a vendor-sourced platform for real-time clinical AI evaluation. Develop code framework, proof of concept (MIMIC database), integrate with EMR-connected solution, and support NASCENT rollout at Townsville University Hospital and other sites.
  • Research & Publication: Deliver high-quality research aligned with NASCENT, publish in leading outlets (e.g., AMIA, JAMIA, MedInfo), support AI use cases (sepsis, deterioration prediction), establish broader research program, secure funding, and apply best-practice methodologies.
  • Independent & Collaborative Research: Conduct impactful research influencing policy, practice, and/or commercialisation, achieving national and emerging international recognition.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Initiate and coordinate collaborative projects across UQ on national and international levels.
  • Methodology Excellence: Apply and promote best-practice research methodologies.

Teaching:

Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.

Supervision and Researcher Development:

Supervise students and research assistants to work on NASCENT use cases, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits.

Citizenship and Service:

Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values.

About You

Academic Level B:

  • Completion of a PhD in the field of Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence.
  • Software engineering expertise, including design and implementation of AI-based models (machine learning, deep learning, natural language programming, Large Language Models) and infrastructure platforms, wrangling large-scale datasets, and use of standard scientific software languages and tools including at least python, git, SQL, R.
  • Demonstrated Healthcare data domain knowledge, in particular data engineering with Electronic Medical Record, OMOP and MIMIC databases
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge and experience in relevant empirical research methods, including clinical AI evaluation, benchmark dataset creation, and time-series data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as demonstrated by e.g., invited talks/seminars and lectures, presentations at conferences, and communication to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated publication record in quality research outlets in relevant fields;
  • The ability to work both independently in a research environment and as part of a research team.
  • High-level organisational skills, with demonstrated capacity to establish and achieve goals.
  • Experience in supervising or working together with research students (e.g., PhD, MPhil, Honours).
  • Ability to build smooth liaisons and professional contacts with academic and industrial collaborators.
  • The ability to work as part of a high-achieving, cross-disciplinary research team.

In addition to Academic Level B above, Academic Level C includes:

  • An established profile in research in the discipline area.
  • National recognition in the area of expertise, with an internationally developing profile and an established record of publications in reputed refereed journal and presenting at conferences.
  • A strong record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
  • A solid record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
  • A growing record of meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with a strong contribution to external activities.
