Your Role on the Team

Position Summary:

The Ambulatory Infection Preventionist provides advanced infection prevention oversight across outpatient services, with responsibility for identifying and communicating infection prevention risk.

This role applies structured risk assessment methodology and independent professional judgment to evaluate exposure vulnerabilities, workflow reliability, regulatory compliance risk, and transmission concerns within complex ambulatory care environments.

By evaluating outpatient practices in alignment with current regulatory standards, the Ambulatory Infection Preventionist delivers evidence-based risk assessments and recommendations to leadership, partnering with clinical and operational teams to reinforce consistent infection prevention expectations and support sustainable risk mitigation across diverse outpatient specialties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently assess and prioritize infection prevention risks across outpatient services using structured risk assessment and professional judgment.
  • Evaluate exposure events, workflow vulnerabilities, regulatory gaps, and emerging infectious threats to determine risk impact and system implications.
  • Assess and identify vulnerabilities in screening processes, transmission-based precautions, high-risk clinical practices, equipment reprocessing, and environmental controls, and deliver evidence-based risk findings and recommendations to leadership.
  • Lead structured evaluations of ambulatory practices and workflows to assess the reliability of infection prevention controls and identify systemic risk exposures.
  • Interpret and translate federal, state, and accreditation requirements to identify compliance risks and inform regulatory readiness strategies.
  • Provide experienced infection prevention consultation in complex or high-risk situations and deliver targeted education to reinforce consistent practice expectations.
  • Provide oversight of infection prevention risks related to clinic design, renovation, construction, and environmental systems to mitigate potential transmission vulnerabilities.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to conduct highly skilled Apparent Cause Analysis, utilize investigation methodologies, and effectively contribute to studies, investigations, reports, and presentations
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS) and their impact on infection prevention
  • Five (5) + years related experience in infection prevention in a healthcare or public health setting
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and proven ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders and work productively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated excellence in public speaking and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated advanced, skilled information resource, providing high level advice and recommendations on complex issues
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new infection control protocols and policies on highly complex issues and build and maintain a climate of trust inspiring commitment from others to engage in infection control initiatives
  • Consistently interacts with all members of the organization in ways that enhance understanding, respect, cooperation and problem solving
  • Bachelor's degree in health-related field and/or equivalent combination of experience/training
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical and operational issues in infection control principles, regulatory guidelines, investigation methodologies, data collection, epidemiology, microbiology, patient care, and related issues
  • Advanced knowledge and ability with Microsoft Office applications
  • Advanced analytical and data management skills with the ability to identify trends, analyze data, and implement evidence-based interventions
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
  • Knowledge of UC policies and procedures
  • Current RN License
  • Certification in Infection Control
  • Experience supporting multi-specialty or procedural outpatient services.
  • Experience evaluating infection prevention considerations in clinic renovation or construction projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret regulatory guidance and translate requirements into clear practice expectations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience presenting findings to leadership.
