Basic Function
Please Note: Kern Community College District accepts applications for part-time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis. Kern Community College District is soliciting applications for part-time, hourly adjunct instructors. The starting salary range is $67.00/hour; Hourly rate may vary based on type of assignment and the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula.
Representative Duties
This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and more importantly, focuses on the development of basic conversation skills emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out of class requirements.
Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level. Describe and demonstrate American Sign Language classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement. Compose ASL Gloss translation from English. Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf. Examine and show an understanding of history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.
This assignment may include teaching at other campus sites, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, distance learning and multiple teaching methodologies.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience OR Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience. OR The equivalent.
AND - A demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
