AmeriCorps Next Step Adviser (25-26 Cohort)

Advise NC at NC State is an AmeriCorps post-secondary access program that aims to increase the post-secondary enrollment for high school students across North Carolina. Advise NC at NC State recruits recent college graduates to serve as “near peer” AmeriCorps Next Step Advisers in high-need high schools across the state. Our program is dedicated to closing the gap in post-secondary attainment and ensuring all North Carolina students have access to pathways beyond high school.
AmeriCorps Next Step Advisers serve in a partner high school to increase the post-secondary enrollment among all students. Next Step Advisers:
- Provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid advising to any student or family seeking assistance
- Organize group events that encourage students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to post-secondary opportunities
- Establish productive and strategic relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers within the partner school
- Enhance visibility of the role through school and community outreach
- Document and analyze student interactions to assist in the assessment and long-term sustainability of the program
- Maintain expertise in admissions and financial aid advising
Additional Details: AmeriCorps Next Step Advisers report to NC State-based program staff, as well as a high school-based onsite supervisors. They participate in paid training during the summer and ongoing position-related training throughout the program year. They participate in ongoing personal professional development throughout the program year. They commit to one academic year (11 months) of service with a preferred two-year commitment if mutually agreed upon by the program staff and the Next Step Adviser. They must be able to relocate to the service area and be involved in the surrounding community.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday. Daily work hours follow the partner high school's expected schedule for faculty and staff. Other Work/Responsibilities: The Next Step Adviser position is an AmeriCorps position which requires 1700 hours of service and includes a commitment to participate in national days of service and additional responsibilities if called upon.
Minimum Experience/Education: Bachelor’s degree completed within approximately four years of service. All majors considered. Department Required Skills: Strong organization, leadership, and communication skills; Work well with youth and diverse populations; Collaborate effectively with others; Initiative, tact, and diplomacy; Serve independently and take initiative; A strong commitment to service; Navigate Google and Microsoft Office suite.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education: Previous work with youth or coursework around youth and education; Previous work with diverse populations; Spanish language proficiency; Previous leadership positions; Previous involvement in a committed volunteer partnership; Priority given to graduates of NC State University during the initial application review process.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $37,000 - 38,000 Salary (Exact Living Allowance dependent on grantor). Job Open Date: 07/18/2025.
