Description
The Anesthesiology Residency Program Director is responsible for the overall development, management, and administration of the program. This role ensures program compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards while fostering an environment of educational excellence and high-quality patient care. The Program Director is pivotal in recruiting, evaluating, and supporting residents throughout their training.
Qualifications
- MD or DO with Board Certification in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology or the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology.
- Eligible for an unrestricted CT license.
- Academic credentials qualifying for Assistant/Associate Professor or higher at Yale School of Medicine.
- At least three years of post-training clinical activity.
- Experience in program administration, teaching, resident mentorship, and educational leadership, with a commitment to continuous professional development.
- Strong organizational, leadership, mentorship, and communication skills with cross-disciplinary collaboration abilities.
- Demonstrated professionalism, high-quality patient care, and educational excellence.
- Dedication to diversity and inclusivity in residency recruitment and training, with national recognition in relevant societies and specialty boards.
Program Leadership and Administration:
Oversee daily operations and strategic planning of the residency program.
Ensure compliance with ACGME and ABA standards and other regulatory requirements.
Lead accreditation processes, including site visit preparation, reporting, and self-studies.
Serve as a liaison between the residency program, GME office, hospital and medical school leadership, and other departments.
Resident Education and Development:
Develop individualized learning plans, evaluate resident progress, and provide mentorship.
Incorporate resident feedback on curriculum effectiveness for continuous improvement.
Offer academic counseling and professional development through workshops and mentorship.
Oversee recruitment, ensuring diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging.
Maintain departmental residency policies and procedures and ensure compliance with ACGME work hour regulations.
Program Innovation and Strategic Development
Identify and implement innovative educational methods and digital tools.
Develop program goals aligned with departmental and institutional objectives.
Resident Wellness and Resilience
Foster a supportive environment for resident wellness, emphasizing resilience and well-being.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB)
Expand DEI efforts to encompass recruitment, retention, and the promotion of an inclusive culture.
Develop strategies to address biases and create a supportive learning environment.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Promote collaboration with other specialties, especially critical care and surgical departments, to enhance interdisciplinary training.
Data and Metrics-Driven Accountability
Utilize data analytics to monitor program success and resident performance, ensuring data-informed decisions.
Community Engagement and Advocacy
Build relationships with community health organizations and foster an alumni network to support mentorship and continued engagement.
Faculty Development and Collaboration
Mentor faculty involved in the residency program, encouraging effective teaching and supervision.
Facilitate regular faculty meetings to discuss resident progress and program development.
Support faculty research, teaching innovations, and active participation in national organizations (ASA, SAAAPM).
Quality Improvement and Patient Care
Maintain high patient care standards in resident training.
Oversee resident involvement in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
Encourage resident participation in scholarly activities, research, and presentations at national and internal conferences.
Program Evaluation and Improvement
Monitor resident performance through evaluations, in-training exams, and case logs.
Conduct annual program evaluations with input from residents, faculty, and stakeholders.
Lead continuous improvement efforts based on evaluation and feedback, balancing service obligations with educational experiences.
Maintain a Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) to assess resident achievement and provide feedback.
Compliance and Reporting
Ensure adherence to ACGME policies, institutional guidelines, and national requirements.
Prepare and submit required documentation, including progress reports and evaluations, to accrediting bodies (ACGME, ABA).
Address any identified deficiencies and comply with NRMP matching requirements.
Attend monthly GMEC meetings.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
Emphasize ongoing advancements in residency education, patient care, and the integration of new methodologies to support the program’s evolving needs and standards.
