Animal Attendant S05 - Small Animal Community Practice

We are seeking a mission-oriented Animal Attendant to join our team at Cornell's Small Animal Community Practice (SACP) which is an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) certified, state-of-the-art, primary care facility offering preventative medicine, radiology, surgery and dentistry services to dogs and cats. Our veterinary students manage cases primarily, fully supported by expert staff and veterinarians. The Animal Attendant will support the Community Practice Service, Primary Care Surgery Service, and related programs and services as needed, including Shelter Outreach Service (SOS) and high-quality high-volume spay-neuter (HQHVSN).

As an Animal Attendant, you will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the SACP building, including hallways and other assigned areas.
  • Clean and disinfect all areas throughout shift, including exam rooms between clients, kennel areas, surgical and pre-surgical areas, along with removal and disposal of trash and bio hazardous wastes, along with feces, urine, vomit, and other body fluids. Restock wards, treatment areas and workrooms with appropriate supplies to prepare for the next patient.
  • Under the supervision of a veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician (LVT), assist with a variety of duties associated with patient care and maintenance of the SACP, like assisting the veterinarians and LVTs with restraint of animals for medical procedures, preparing supplies for medical procedures, providing animals with a clean and comfortable environment, which includes cleaning, disinfecting cages and all other areas as assigned, walking patients outside and collect urine/fecal samples as needed, recording patient observations on treatment sheets.

Required Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma with at least 6 months prior experience, including direct experience with companion animal handling in a veterinary facility using various holding techniques, and in housekeeping/custodial/disinfection work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of basic infection control practices and the ability to adhere to and enforce those practices, utilizing various disinfectants and proper procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful, but not required.

The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception.

Important Details about the Position:

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • The schedule will be Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:30pm which will be subject to change based on hospital needs and may include weekend and holiday shifts.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.
