The Position
The position is located at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO), which is one of two key sites for the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) in Australia. The site sits at the summit of Mt Woorut, NSW, and is set within the stunning National Heritage Listed Warrumbungle National Park, around 30 kilometres from the town of Coonabarabran, NSW.
The Night Assistant will operate the Anglo-Australian Telescope at night and is responsible for the safety of the Observers present and the safe operation of the telescope itself. The Night Assistant will provide technical support, fault finding and reporting and will assist in the operation of the Instrumentation and other systems such as the automated 2.3m telescope.
The role consists of seven night long night shifts, working from sunset to sunrise. Nine such shifts will be scheduled for each twelve months of employment. Accommodation in the ANU Lodge at Siding Spring is provided for each shift if required. There is no requirement for regular daytime attendance at Siding Spring in between the scheduled night shifts.
This role may also involve working in confined spaces, working at heights, and driving to and from sites. For further information, please refer to the Position Description and PEWER form link below.
The Person
We are looking for a technically sound, IT competent person who follows good WHS practises and is comfortable working at night, either alone and/or closely with observers (remote or in person). A keen interest in astronomy would be an asset.
