Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting an Applications Software Developer to join our Te Tai Matihiko - Digital Solutions Applications Team on a fixed-term, full-time basis until June 2026.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide functional and technical consultation, investigation and analysis of requirements and issues.
- Consult on all aspects of relevant technologies and develop towards being a subject matter expert (SME) in at least 4 other key Digital Solutions system areas.
- Develop, maintain, troubleshoot and provide high quality solutions in multi-platform IT environments within an Agile (scrum) framework.
- Undertake unit and peer testing including the creation of testing scripts and/or facilities.
- Maintain and develop technical currency (by actively participating in user group, vendor and technology forums and availing themselves of other resources).
- Contribute to Te Tai Matihiko - Digital Solutions projects in accordance with the project methodology guidelines as outlined by Te Tai Matihiko - Digital Solutions Programme Management Office.

You will be a motivated, team-focused tester who plans work effectively, communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences, and is committed to continuous learning.
Key requirements:
- Proven experience in complex software application development, implementation and support in medium to large IT environment.
- Proven ability to develop applications in at least two of the following:
- Oracle Tools in a web environment as well as PLSQL/SQL.
- Java, Java script, HTML.
- .Net, VB script, SQL.
- Sound knowledge of and experience with agile methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban.
- Proven problem solving and analysis skills.
- Experience in Oracle and SQL Server based applications.
- Experience with application integration.
- Experience with Microsoft, Linux and Open-Source solution architectures and database technologies.
- Strong communication skills; must be able to communicate difficult technical concepts to a wide audience.
- Ability to build highly effective relationships with customers and team colleagues.
- Demonstrated experience in working across a number of projects simultaneously.
- Experience in producing high quality documents and reports using word-processing, spread sheeting and presentation software (Microsoft product knowledge is an advantage).
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology / or relevant experience.
It’s desirable that you also bring:
- Experience in supporting technical and business applications in any tertiary education sector.
- Knowledge of web service technologies (e.g. REST, SOAP, XML, JSON).
- Experience with developing web applications (e.g. Grails, Java, java script, CSS and HTML).
- Knowledge of any open-source frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, and Grails.
- Exposure to source control processes and tools (e.g. SVN, JIRA).
