Aquatics Maintenance Technician

The Aquatics Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of the University's aquatic facilities. This position is responsible for overseeing water chemistry, filtration systems, and facility maintenance for both the Hixon Natatorium and outdoor pool, while also serving as a key operational and leadership partner within the aquatics program.

This role requires a hands-on professional who can balance technical expertise, safety oversight, and team support--stepping in as a leader when needed and ensuring day-to-day operations run seamlessly.

Key Responsibilities

Aquatics Operations & Facility Management

  • Maintain proper water chemistry and balance across all aquatic facilities
  • Perform daily monitoring of filtration systems and preventative maintenance of mechanical equipment
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure a safe and compliant environment
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and address maintenance or safety concerns in a timely manner
  • Perform general repairs and upkeep of aquatics equipment and facilities

Program & Event Support

  • Assist in the coordination and execution of intercollegiate swim meets and special events
  • Provide support for recreational swim, academic programming, and athletics activities
  • Serve as a lifeguard or secondary responder when operationally necessary

Staff Support & Leadership

  • Assist with supervision, training, and development of lifeguard staff
  • Contribute to ongoing updates of aquatics policies, procedures, and operations manuals
  • Serve as a supervisory backup in the absence of the Director of Aquatics

Safety, Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure compliance with all University, local, state, and NCAA Division III safety regulations
  • Promote a culture of accountability, preparedness, and professionalism in all aquatics operations

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience with pool mechanical systems, filtration, and chemical control
  • Background in commercial pool and/or spa maintenance
  • Current Lifeguard Certification
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience training or supervising staff in an aquatics environment
  • Lifeguard Instructor certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of commercial pool systems and water treatment processes
  • Ability to operate aquatics equipment and relevant software systems
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to safety and operational excellence
  • Ability to respond effectively in high-pressure or emergency situations
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
  • Must be able to respond to operational and emergency needs as they arise
  • Position requires maintaining consistent attendance and reliability in support of aquatics operations
