Archivist
Wright State University Libraries seeks a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented Archivist with a focus on archival and digital preservation and access to lead preservation efforts and coordinate access to both physical and digital archival materials. The Archivist will develop, implement, and manage digitization of collections workflows, oversee preservation strategies and activities, and support reference and outreach activities. Working closely with a team of archivists, metadata specialists, and student workers, this position plays a key role in ensuring the long-term usability and accessibility of our historical collections in all formats. Will collaborate with key stakeholders on a variety of projects, including but not limited to treatment and housing projects, exhibitions/loans, digitization projects, outreach and engagement.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library/Information Science (ALA-accredited) or in History/Public History with archival concentration.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with archival processing, preservation practices, and digital collections (graduate-level experience accepted).
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and archival software platforms (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Ex Libris Alma, OCLC).
- Knowledge of metadata and archival standards (DACS, EAD, MARC, Dublin Core).
- Understanding of digital imaging formats and software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, TIFF, WAV).
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects both independently and collaboratively.
- Commitment to excellent customer service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience creating digital exhibits
- Experience digitizing multiple photographic, audio, and video formats
- Project management experience
- Familiarity with digitization equipment and software
Essential Functions and percent of time:
35%: Digital Access & Project Management
- Establish and manage workflows for digital preservation projects from selection to online availability; oversees fulfillment of external media orders and internal reformatting and printing of orders.
- Oversee digitization practices, quality control, and metadata creation for online access.
- Maintain and support the archival collection management tool (ArchivesSpace).
- Ensure digital projects meet accessibility standards and copyright requirements.
- Provide guidance and training to library staff, faculty, and students on digital preservation best practices, repository tools, and metadata standards.
- Regularly assess the digital collection to identify preservation risks and plan for ongoing access and sustainability.
- Monitor and evaluate emerging trends and technologies related to digital preservation.
25%: Preservation & Environmental Monitoring
- Update and implement the department's preservation plan for collections in various formats.
- Responsible for the preservation activities safeguarding originals, including: monitoring and improving storage environments, proper housing of materials, initiating facilities requests, and conducting condition assessments.
- Plan and execute rehousing, reformatting, and preservation treatment projects.
- Provide preservation training to student assistants and staff.
- Manage the department's digital preservation program in coordination with the Collections Manager Archivist.
- Identify grant opportunities to support preservation and reformatting initiatives.
15%: Cataloging, Description & Metadata
- Create and update catalog and finding aid records using MARC, DACS, EAD, and other standards.
- Revise archival descriptions in archives and library catalog.
- Train and supervise students in metadata quality control for digitized content.
Working Conditions:
