The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is seeking to appoint Archivist (0.4FTE).
The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology holds world-class collections of anthropology and archaeology. The Museum's collections are formally Designated by DCMS in their entirety and are made up of four main bodies of material: archaeological and anthropological artefacts, including many outstanding works of world art, photographs, and an archive. The archive is a rich resource, estimated to be over 50,000 documents, embracing an extraordinary range of travellers' and scientists' letters, primary field journals, notes and drawings, records of Museum acquisitions and of Museum history. The documents are important to research fields from art and archaeology, Indigenous cultures, artefact provenances, to the formation of archaeology and anthropology in Britain, and the activities of many famous scientists.
The main purpose of this role is to make the material accessible to researchers and staff. The Archivist will include appraising documents, working to arrange and describe material, create digital records, and rehouse materials, flagging any issues that require conservation. They will work with the support of a working group, of MAA staff and senior external archivists, to guide and support the activity.
The successful candidate will have relevant experience of working with archive material in a relevant setting. They will have experience in using an automated library or archives management system and supervising the work of a small team of volunteers. Working knowledge of archival cataloguing standards, including ISAD(G) and EAD are essential to the role, as are good attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. They will be hold a postgraduate qualification in archives or record management, or have relevant comparable experience.
The Museum is one of the University of Cambridge's eight museums and is both a museum open to the general public and a research and teaching facility of the University. The Museum is open to the public Tuesdays to Sundays and welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year.
