Area Coordinator of Residence Life and Housing
Primary duties include assisting the Residence Life & Housing Office in areas of leadership, education and training, residential curriculum, RA supervision, and assisting in coordinating campus housing. The position is a part of the Student Life staff, reporting to the Director of Residence Life & Housing.
The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for creating and maintaining a comprehensive residential environment that is academically and socially stimulating. The AC oversees a residential area with approximately 500-700 residents and 1-2 functional areas in the office. This position requires significant interaction and collaboration with many campus partners.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist with day-to-day management of the residential program;
- Assist with and facilitate Resident Assistant (RA) recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation;
- Supervise 15-20 Resident Assistants (RAs) within the assigned residential area;
- Develop meaningful working relationships with RAs through one-on-one meetings and staff meetings;
- Implement community development strategies aligned with the residential curriculum;
- Work collaboratively with Facilities Management and Public Safety to create a safe environment conducive to learning by monitoring work orders, repairs and safety concerns;
- Manage a budget used for programming and student staff development within the residential area;
- Respond to crisis situations including but not limited to facilities related emergencies, medical emergencies, mental health emergencies, and behavioral concerns as part of the professional staff on-call rotation.
- Serve as a conduct officer within the college’s student conduct process;
- Aid in the development and implementation of learning outcomes and assessment procedures for Residence Life & Housing;
- Provide support for and direction to the Residence Life & Housing student staff;
- Assist in spring housing selection process and placements using the housing software system;
- Assist with opening and closing responsibilities, including key distribution and return, early arrivals and scheduling volunteers;
- Assist with summer housing placement, including move-in, key distribution, and move-out;
- Conduct regular building walk-throughs;
- Assist with abroad housing placements for Centre Term and spring term;
- Demonstrate an appreciation for and sensitivity to an inclusive academic community, fostering a welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff from all social, economic, cultural, ideological, racial, and ethnic backgrounds;
- Occasional night and weekend work is required.
Marginal Job Functions:
- Assist with Student Life special projects and events including, but not limited to, new student orientation, leadership retreats, room selection, Homecoming, fraternity and sorority recruitment, Senior Week and campus programming;
- Contribute to the overall success of the department by performing all other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Master’s Degree preferred in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field preferred.
- One year of full-time or 2 years of part-time residence life experience in a collegiate environment strongly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presenting to groups and in a one-to-one setting.
- Willingness to work flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend hours, as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Limited pushing, pulling, and lifting.Lifting would not exceed 20 lbs.
- Ability to navigate campus and access various areas as part of the duties associated with the position.
