Position Summary:
The Department of Civil, Materials, and Environmental Engineering (CME) at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track/tenured faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level, starting August 16, 2026. We seek candidates whose work focuses on one or more of the following areas:
- Natural hazard mitigation, adaptation, and infrastructure resilience (e.g., floods, wildfires, tornadoes, etc.)
- Smart city infrastructure with focus on the socio-technical systems.
Candidates working at the intersection of emerging engineering technologies and Civil Engineering related fields and using systems thinking approaches, involving both qualitative and quantitative methods, are especially encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate will complement the existing strengths of the CME department and enhance collaboration among our core research groups (Environmental, Structural, Construction, Transportation, Materials, Geotechnical, and others) that are highly active in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate will have opportunities to engage in cross-disciplinary teams across UIC and leverage excellent existing departmental laboratory facilities.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to
- Establish and maintain a strong, externally funded research program
- Conduct interdisciplinary research and secure funding from industry partners, federal, state, and local agencies, national laboratories (e.g., Argonne), and other institutions
- Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses
- Advise and mentor students
- Provide service to the university, profession, and broader community
- Publish in high-quality technical journals.
Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
The CME Department has degree programs in civil, materials, and environmental engineering. The Department offers a BS degree in Environmental Engineering, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering, and MS and PhD degrees in Materials Engineering. The department currently has an undergraduate enrollment of about 480 and a graduate enrollment of about 170. Additional information about the department is available at www.cme.uic.edu.
The UIC College of Engineering has experienced substantial growth in recent years; both faculty size and annual research expenditures have doubled to more than 200 faculty and over $50 million, respectfully. Campus-wide research activity has expanded to approximately $500M. Located in the heart of Chicago - a modern, livable, vibrant, and diverse city the university is adjacent to major high-tech corridors, research institutions, national laboratories, and industries, offering exceptional opportunities for collaboration. UIC is the largest public university in the Chicago metropolitan area, with an annual budget of $4.53 billion and an enrollment of 34,000. It is one of only four Carnegie R1 research universities in Illinois.
Salary Range:
The previously determined salary range for this position was $100,000–$150,000. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.
This position is intended to be eligible for benefits. This includes Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, a Retirement Plan, Paid time Off, and Tuition waivers for employees and dependents.
