Position overview

Salary range: The current salary for this position ranges from $80,800 (Assistant Professor academic year 9-month appointment) to $270,000 (Full Professor fiscal year 11-month appointment). However, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: July 1, 2026 or January 1, 2027

Position description

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank.

Our goal is to recruit an outstanding colleague with strong interests in ocular disease, ocular biology, and therapeutics, or a related research area relevant to the eye or vision.

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science has several clinical facilities that serve a large diverse patient population, a clinical research center, and many laboratories in the Vision Science graduate program conducting research in optics, ocular biology, ocular disease, translational and clinical research, molecular and cell biology, microbiology and infectious disease, perception, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and computational vision.

The successful candidate will also have opportunities to be considered for membership in other programs across the UC Berkeley campus, including the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases, and the Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. Current faculty also enjoy collaborations with the UC Berkeley Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Computer Science, Molecular and Cell Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Infectious Disease and multiple divisions within the School of Public Health, as well as the UC San Francisco Department of Ophthalmology.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Candidates must have an OD, MD, DO, PharmD, DVM or equivalent clinical degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent international degree) and/or a PhD (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates with both research and clinical training. The successful applicant will demonstrate potential for exceptional basic, clinical, and/or translational research achievements as well as excellence in teaching in both the professional (Doctor of Optometry) and graduate (PhD program in Vision Science) curricula. Applicants should also have the potential to establish strong collaborations at the local, national, and global levels.
