Description

The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences (EPS) and the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC) at Yale University invite applications for a tenure-track appointment at any rank (assistant, associate, or full professor) in the areas of marine and geological carbon dioxide removal and greenhouse gas mitigation.

A start date of July 2026 or later is expected for this position. We encourage applicants from disciplines including (but not limited to) physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, as well as geochemistry, petrology, and sedimentology.

The YCNCC fosters research on carbon capture and greenhouse gas reduction using ecological, geological, and oceanographic approaches. Areas of interest include:

  • Ocean alkalinity enhancement
  • Management and restoration of forest and grassland ecosystems
  • Blue carbon
  • Agricultural practices
  • Enhanced weathering

YCNCC faculty work across multiple Yale units, including the Yale School of the Environment, and departments in the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and the School of Engineering & Applied Science, specifically the Departments of Earth & Planetary Sciences, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Chemistry, and Chemical & Environmental Engineering.

The academic appointment will be in Earth & Planetary Sciences, but the new faculty member will play a key role in the ongoing development and success of the YCNCC. The successful candidate will expand existing collaborations between YCNCC and EPS, particularly in enhanced weathering and ocean alkalinity enhancement.

We seek candidates who will develop outstanding research programs, demonstrate exceptional scholarly impact and teaching excellence, and strengthen the existing research and academic community within the Department, the Center, and the University.

The successful applicant will:

  • Develop and implement an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Advise and mentor students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and vibrant academic environment.
  • Teach courses in their area of expertise and related disciplines.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field at the time of hire.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit:

  1. Letter of application (~1 page).
  2. Curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications.
  3. Statement of research interests (2–3 pages), including how the applicant’s research program contributes to scalable solutions for greenhouse gas reduction.
  4. Statement of teaching, mentoring, and broader impacts (2–3 pages).
  5. Names and contact information for three professional references (letters will be requested later if needed).

Applications must be submitted online via Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/170225.
