Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Positions in Environmental Chemistry 2026-2027

Description

IE University's School of Science and Technology invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Environmental Science with a specialization in Environmental Chemistry, Analytics & potentially Toxicology. We seek a scientist focused on emerging contaminants and evidence-based risk assessment, who advances the state of the art in analytical chemistry -including LC/GC-MS(/MS), high-resolution MS for suspect and non-target screening (HRMS), and ICP-MS- and connects occurrence and fate data to actionable exposure and risk evaluations across water, soil, air, and biota.

Candidates who integrate method development (e.g., passive sampling, microextraction, green analytical chemistry), transformation products, and data fusion (remote sensing, sensor networks, omics/toxicology readouts) are especially encouraged to apply. Senior candidates with a profile in ecotoxicology (e.g., mechanistic toxicology, AOPs, mixture toxicity, in vitro bioassays) are additionally welcome.

We value candidates eager to collaborate in applied research with IE’s Impact Xcelerator and external partners (public agencies, utilities, NGOs, and industry), especially on contaminant monitoring networks, PFAS and other CECs, wastewater-based epidemiology, environmental forensics, human and ecological risk assessments, and nature-based/engineering solutions for mitigation. The ability to contribute to multidisciplinary initiatives that translate chemical measurements into science-based policy and management decisions will be key to success.

A Doctoral degree in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Toxicology, or a related field is preferred. Prior teaching experience and evidence of academic or professional contributions in the field will be viewed favorably.

Faculty are expected to engage in high-quality research, pursue external funding, and contribute to curriculum development and university service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach at undergraduate and graduate levels (English) in Environmental Chemistry, Instrumental Methods, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Pollution Analysis & Assessment, and related areas.
  • Conduct high-impact, externally funded research on emerging contaminants (e.g., PFAS, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, micro/nanoplastics and associated additives), suspect/non-target screening, fate and transformation (including metabolites and transformation products), exposure modeling and probabilistic risk assessment, and decision-support tools for regulators and practitioners.
  • Supervise and mentor students across undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. programs; build an inclusive lab culture that spans field/lab analytics and computational data science (chemometrics, ML for spectra/feature annotation).
  • Collaborate with research and societal partners to co-design and deploy monitoring pipelines, chemical indicators, and risk metrics; contribute to method validation and inter-laboratory exercises where appropriate.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, embedding reproducible research, FAIR data, QA/QC and method validation (blanks, surrogates, spikes, MDLs); keep courses aligned with emerging trends (e.g., HRMS-based non-target screening, ion-mobility MS, AI/ML-assisted spectral deconvolution, exposomics, and green analytical chemistry).
  • Participate in academic service and contribute to the strategic growth of the School of Science and Technology.

We offer:

  • A competitive salary in line with top-ranked European academic institutions.
  • A generous seed research fund to cover travel, equipment, and relocation costs.
  • State-of-the-art campus facilities and support to build your lab infrastructure.
  • A professional and stimulating international working environment with English as the de facto language.
  • Full access to public health services through membership of the National Insurance Scheme plus a discount plan to acquire an additional private health insurance plan.
  • Diversity in an open-minded, inclusive and family-friendly environment.
  • Inspiring campus life on a state-of-the-art equipped unique campus in the hearts of Madrid and Segovia, conveniently well communicated.

About IE University and the School of Science and Technology

IE University is an internationally recognized institution originally founded as a Business School. We consider ourselves the most international institution of higher education, with approximately 85% of our students coming from outside Spain and typically over 120 countries represented on campus.

It spans four campuses: the María de Molina postgraduate hub in Madrid’s financial district; the IE Tower (opened in 2021, one of the city’s five business-district towers; 6,000-student capacity); and two in Segovia, ~30 minutes by AVE from Madrid. This position is based at Segovia’s Convent of Santa Cruz la Real, a 13th-century national heritage site near the Roman aqueduct that blends historic architecture with modern infrastructure.

Facilities include advanced study spaces, media studios, fully equipped labs (Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Earth & Life Sciences, Environmental Technology), and extensive sports facilities. The School of Science & Technology offers industry-relevant BSc/MSc programs in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Data Analytics, and Environmental Science. The IE Impact Xcelerator enables new faculty to join applied research with academic and industry partners in healthcare, environmental science, finance, and cybersecurity, leveraging IE Business School’s network.

The School of Science and Technology prepares students with industry relevant skills in the context of STEM and related educational programs. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Data analytics, and Environmental Science.

The IE Impact Xcelerator offers new faculty the opportunity to participate in applied research labs in collaboration with research groups and companies in fields such as healthcare, environmental science, finance, and cybersecurity, profiting from the rich network of IE Business School.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Analytical/Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Toxicology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior teaching experience and evidence of academic or professional contributions in the field will be viewed favorably.
  • Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Spanish is desirable but not mandatory.
