Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - Transfusion Medicine Specialist

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, an academic teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, is seeking a permanent Academic Transfusion Medicine Specialist (FTE 0.5–0.6) to join the Division of Transfusion Medicine & Tissue Bank, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics.
The successful applicant must be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date will be January 5, 2026, or shortly thereafter.
Position Details
We are seeking a physician who will foster excellence in transfusion medicine practice, education, and research at the hospital.
The qualified applicant shall hold a medical degree and relevant Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (e.g., Area of Focused Competence in Transfusion Medicine) or equivalent (e.g., Anatomical Pathology/Clinical Pathology with accredited fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine) and be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Ontario.
As a trauma, cardiac, obstetrics, neonatal, and cancer centre, the candidate will have clinical responsibilities in the management of transfusion needs for these specific populations.
Additional training or exposure in cellular therapies such as stem cell processing and apheresis, tissue banking, as well as regulatory certification (e.g., FACT accreditation) will be an asset.
In addition to medical coverage of the transfusion service, responsibilities will include on-call coverage and some on-site coverage with Sunnybrook partnered hospitals, education and administrative roles (both local and with community partners) as mandated by the Division Head/Department Chief.
Participation in clinical hematology or hematopathology services (e.g., core laboratory/coagulation) may be contemplated, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and interests.
A fully accredited Area of Focused Competency in Transfusion Medicine program is in place, and teaching of residents, fellows, and medical students is expected.
English is the primary language of work.
Academic Appointment and Compensation
The successful candidate must be eligible for an academic appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the uniform minimal level of compensation for laboratory physicians in the Province of Ontario (currently approximately $404,000 per annum, prorated to the level of service provision).
Partial remuneration may also be based on fee-for-service for clinical hematology services, if applicable.
Division and Research Environment
Members of the Division of Transfusion Medicine and Tissue Bank at Sunnybrook participate in teaching, research, and quality improvement.
Members also work as part of the University of Toronto Quality in Utilization, Education and Safety in Transfusion research program, in close collaboration with transfusion medicine specialists and scientists at the University of Toronto academic hospitals and partners, including Canadian Blood Services and the Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network.
The Division enjoys close and dynamic interactions with other Divisions of the Department, including hematopathology, molecular, anatomic pathology, microbiology, and biochemistry.
