Position overview

Position title: Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery Faculty

Salary range: The posted UC Salary scales set the minimum pay at the appointment as determined by appointment type and if applicable, rank and/or step. The base pay range for this position is $325,000 - $425,000. Salary is negotiated annually. Additional compensation may be available if the position includes membership in the Health Sciences Compensation Plan. You can view the 2025-26 scales on the UCOP website.

Position description

The University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery is committed to academic excellence among its faculty, staff, and students. The Division seeks to recruit academically focused surgeon-scientist(s) with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, education, and research in trauma and acute care surgery.

The selected candidate(s) will provide high-quality clinical care in trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery; teach and mentor trainees; and develop an independent or collaborative research program aligned with the Division's academic mission. Areas of scholarly interest may include-but are not limited to-resuscitation science, neurotrauma, injury biology, outcomes and systems research, and health disparities in acute care surgery.

The selected candidate(s) may be considered for a divisional or programmatic leadership role at the discretion of the Division Chief.

We welcome applications from individuals with a strong interest or emerging profile in trauma and acute care surgery.

The appropriate series and appointment will be based on the candidate's background and experience.

Appointments may require candidates to be self-funded.

As a member of the Health Sciences Compensation Plan, the appointee should be aware that there are limitations on outside professional activities, and clinical moonlighting is expressly prohibited. Additional information can be found here: Health Sciences Compensation Plan (APM-671)

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

(required at time of application)

  • Candidates must have an MD or equivalent degree.
  • Candidates must have completed a General Surgery residency and be board certified or board eligible.
  • Candidates must have, or be eligible for, a California medical license, or an equivalent certification or permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.

Preferred qualifications

  • Candidates who have completed a 2-year combined Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery fellowship, or an equivalent program, are preferred.
  • Candidates who are board-certified or board-eligible in Surgical Critical Care at the start of appointment are preferred.
  • Candidates with an MD/PhD or an equivalent advanced research degree in a field relevant to trauma and critical care, such as immunology, physiology, public health, bioengineering, or data science, are preferred.
  • Candidates with documented academic research experience are preferred. This may include at least one extramural grant as PI, Co-PI, or investigator, and/or a record of peer-reviewed publications, with an average of at least three PMID-indexed articles per year of academic practice in trauma, acute care surgery, or surgical critical care.
  • Candidates with experience in multidisciplinary or translational research collaborations are preferred.
  • Candidates with experience developing and leading programmatic initiatives, including, but not limited to, research consortia, injury prevention programs, or system-level EGS implementation, are preferred.
  • Candidates with experience in mentorship are also preferred.
