Department of Cell and Developmental Biology

School of Molecular and Cellular Biology

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology (CDB) in the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks applicants for a full-time tenure-track assistant or associate professor in the broad area "Mechanisms of Aging." The ideal candidate would be expected to approach the question of aging from various perspectives and use multiple techniques. New faculty would synergize with existing strengths in nuclear biology, proteostasis, epigenetics, RNA biology, and/or regeneration, enabling collaborations that would apply this expertise to the question of aging.

The CDB faculty provides a vibrant academic environment that produces foundational discoveries in diverse areas of cell biology (https://mcb.illinois.edu/departments/cell-developmental-biology). The department seeks candidates who will significantly contribute to our mission by developing strong and independent research and teaching programs. Research topics of interest include but are not limited to, high-resolution quantitative imaging, high-throughput "omic" technologies, quantitative genetics, bioinformatics, and computational modeling. Successful candidates will be appointed to the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (https://mcb.illinois.edu).

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent, with a background in cell or developmental biology or a closely related field, have a track record of research accomplishments, and have potential for future independent research.

Successful candidates will be located in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology within the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology on the UIUC campus. The candidates will be expected to conduct independent research, participate in our undergraduate and graduate programs, and teach effectively within these programs. The position offers excellent laboratory facilities, generous relocation and start-up funds, and ample opportunities to work with top graduate students. The anticipated starting date is August 16, 2026.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $87,000 to $100,000 for Assistant Professor; $100,000 to $120,000 for Associate Professor for a 9-month service basis. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. It is not typical for a beginning Assistant Professor to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for the position.

The UIUC campus has state-of-the-art research facilities and collaborative initiatives, including the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Cancer Center at Illinois, and the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center. Investigators have access to cutting-edge research facilities, including next-generation sequencing and single-cell genomics, multi-model biomedical imaging, including super-resolution microscopy and cryoEM, biological engineering, high-end computing, transgenic mice, flow cytometry and cell sorting, proteomics, and metabolomics.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a top-ranked public university. UIUC received top rankings by Harvard University's Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education for its pre-tenure practices in balancing work and home life (https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/11/15/exemplars-good-pre-tenure-practices).
