Assistant/ Associate/ Professor - Family Physician Clinician-Scientist
The Department of Family and Community Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital in conjunction with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto is seeking a qualified full-time Family Physician clinician-scientist. The SMH DFCM has the largest primary care research program among Ontario family medicine teaching sites. The department’s mission is reflected in the research conducted by its members to improve health through advocacy, equity, and world-leading primary health care, teaching, and research. DFCM members are leading significant research in areas of population health including social, economic and policy determinants of health, including precarious housing; immigrant and refugee health; Indigenous well-being; primary care models; respiratory infections, HIV, and other infections; diabetes and other chronic diseases; and global and international health.
We are seeking a candidate for an academic position description of Clinician Scientist (CS) and who must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. The expected start date of the position is October 1, 2026, or shortly before or thereafter.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and College of Family Physicians of Canada certification in family medicine (or equivalent) and be eligible for licensing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. There is a strong preference for family physicians who can practice comprehensive family medicine at the St. Michael’s Department of Family and Community Medicine and Academic Family Health Team with the expectation that clinical care and clinical teaching will occupy 30% of their time and 70% will be protected research time.
A graduate degree or equivalent in health services research, epidemiology, a relevant social science or related fields is required. An outstanding record of accomplishment in research including grants, publications and presentations appropriate for career stage is required. Evidence of working with policy makers and/or teams across disciplines to answer complex health care questions and engagement of the end users of research is a critical asset. A commitment to social justice and equity is a critical attribute.
The successful candidate will be responsible for directing and supporting a research program including obtaining peer-reviewed grants as principal investigator, writing high impact peer-reviewed papers, supervising students at the graduate level, and presenting at local, national and international meetings. Engagement with patients, clinicians, and policy-makers in the research process is expected. We are seeking a candidate whose research program aims to improve patient care and health outcomes in Primary Care. All candidates must be able to function proficiently in English.
The successful candidate will report to the Chief, Family and Community Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital. St. Michael’s is Canada’s leading Catholic Academic Health Sciences Center, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, and is part of Unity Health Toronto, a network that includes St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare. The St. Michael’s Department of Family and Community Medicine and Academic Family Health Team is a large, dynamic and diverse group comprised of five Family Medicine clinics, all located in Toronto’s downtown core serving 50,000 patients. Our Department is strongly committed to the care of the inner-city population.

Estimated remuneration is estimated to be in the range of $200,000 to $225,000 per annum based on an Alternate Funding Plan, clinical billings and starting research salary support including from the Li Ka Shing Knowledge institute and a research stipend payable through the St. Michael’s Family Medicine Associates academic practice plan.
