Assistant / Associate Professor in Genetic Research
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR as of 1 April 2026, or by agreement.
The field of the position is Genetic Research with Finnish and English as the language of instruction.
The successful applicant will be appointed to a fixed-term (5 years) assistant / associate professorship (tenure track), with a clear and predictable path towards potential future tenuring as full professor https://www.helsinki.fi/en/about-us/careers/academic-careers/university-helsinki-tenure-track.
We are looking for candidates who will strengthen and complement the scientific profile of the Faculty of Medicine Genetic Research in a field other than Oncology. The selected applicant must have strong qualifications in the field of Genetics Research relative to their career stage and must be committed to high-quality research and teaching. The selected candidate is expected to establish and lead an independent research group that conducts innovative research in the field of Genetic Research and to obtain external research funding.
Assistant / Associate Professor
An appointee to the position of assistant/ associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.
The applicant's merits in innovation activities will be considered an advantage when filling the position.
Duties
The Assistant / Associate Professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education in Genetic Research. In addition, the Assistant / Associate Professor participates in practical small group and lecture-based teaching in their area of expertise, as appropriate, across all educational programs in the Faculty. The position includes carrying out and supervising scientific research in Genetic Research, following developments in research in the relevant field and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field.
This task also involves the development of innovation activities in the research field within the faculty. In addition, the duties include other tasks assigned by the Faculty.
Trial period of six months will be applied.
Requirements for language skills
Holders of teaching and research positions at Finnish universities must be proficient in the language of teaching, either Finnish or Swedish.
If a foreigner or a Finnish citizen who is not of native origin, or who has not received their education in Finnish or Swedish, applies for a teaching or research position, they may be granted an exemption from the language proficiency requirements stipulated in the university regulations without a separate application. However, the selected foreigner or Finnish citizen who is not of native origin is required to achieve a reasonable proficiency in Finnish or Swedish during the assistant professor's term. The university supports language learning.
Salary
The salary will be based on level 7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
