Position description

The Department of Neurological Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis will invite applications for a position in translational neuroengineering at the Assistant or Associate professor rank, in the Ladder Rank (tenure track)/In-Residence series, commensurate with experience, with an anticipated start date of November 1, 2025 (this is flexible). Faculty in this series are expected to engage in teaching, independent research and creative work, demonstrate professional competence and activity, and provide University and public service.

Candidates must possess a PhD. and/or M.D. degree. We seek an outstanding candidate focused on addressing how to interface with the spinal cord and/or brain to understand (in both health and disease) and restore physiological functions such as movement, postural control, and autonomic homeostasis. We especially seek candidates who will interact and enhance our growing team focused on human intracranial recording and stimulation, brain-computer interfaces, computational neuroscience, functional and spinal neurosurgery. UC Davis also has a top veterinary program and facilities, presenting the opportunity for parallel work in pre-clinical animal models.

The appointee is expected to have an active research program, a track record or the potential to attract extramural funding, and excellent potential for interactions/collaborations within the Neurological Surgery Department and with the wider UC Davis community including Biomedical Engineering, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and the Center for Neuroscience. The ideal candidate will have interest in applying their research to both basic and translational neuroscience. The applicant’s accomplishments in innovative research and commitments to mentorship, teaching and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion should demonstrate their potential to develop into the future leaders of their fields.

The Department of Neurological Surgery is nationally ranked in U.S. News & World Report and have vibrant research programs studying neuroengineering, brain circuits, spinal-cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases, neuromodulation, neurorestoration, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor, Steps 4, 5, or 6. The reference check involves contacting administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantial findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for assistant professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into Recruit as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for Academic Senate Assistant Professor, Steps 4, 5, or 6 will be subject to reference checks.
