Assistant / Associate Professor of Small Animal Primary Care

The missions of the Department are to educate veterinary students and graduate veterinarians to meet the needs of the pet owning public, to provide advanced patient care, and to generate new knowledge in pet health through basic and applied research. Clinical track faculty at the University of Tennessee are expected to participate in teaching, service, and scholarship programs of the College. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include clinical service and instruction in small animal primary care to DVM students and house officers, didactic program instruction within the preclinical curriculum, and collaboration in clinical discovery or scholarship.

The University of Tennessee Tickle Small Animal Hospital is a comprehensive and fully equipped facility with the expertise needed to provide advanced medical care. Specialty services supported by departmental faculty include: internal medicine, oncology, neurology, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, dermatology, behavior, radiology, radiation oncology, anesthesiology, nutrition, physical therapy, shelter medicine, zoo, and exotic and avian medicine and surgery. The College also houses a nationally renowned Veterinary Social Work program. Facilities include: nuclear medicine, computerized tomography, MRI, radiation therapy, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, hyperbaric unit, and physical therapy. The hospital provides VECCS Level I emergency and critical care service 24 hours per day, 365 days a year.

The Primary Care clinic serves dogs and cats belonging to students, faculty, and staff of the University of Tennessee and is not open to the general public. Pets are seen primarily for wellness, illness, minor surgery, dentistry, and senior screening. The clinic will soon relocate to a newly constructed, full-service primary care clinic separate from the tertiary referral hospital. The successful candidate will join a collaborative service currently staffed by 3 faculty, 2 technicians, and 1 veterinary assistant. Primary care faculty are also committed to developing and supporting spectrum of care opportunities within our college and community.

The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine boasts a collegial environment committed to mentoring new faculty to be successful in their academic career. This includes a Master Teaching Program, which provides resources, programs and leadership to support the highest quality of professionalism and instruction within the various educational missions of the college and a Veterinary Social Work program that provides training and support in the areas of communication and conflict management, compassion fatigue, animal-related grief and bereavement, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. New faculty are assigned an experienced faculty mentor, and the Department has an excellent record in helping faculty successfully earn promotion and tenure.

The University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville Tennessee, a vibrant small city located between the Great Smoky Mountains and Cumberland plateau, an area with rich biodiversity and natural beauty. The Knoxville Urban Wilderness provides over 50 miles of trails and greenways within the city offering ample opportunity for outdoor recreation. Knoxville has an energetic cultural downtown area with excellent restaurants, bustling farmer's markets, live music of all genres, ballet, theater, frequent art and cultural festivals, and men's and women's sporting events. The metropolitan areas of Nashville, Atlanta, Asheville, and Chattanooga are only a short drive away.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree. All applicants should also have a minimum of 2 years clinical experience in companion animal medicine and/or have completed a small animal internship in medicine and surgery. The successful candidate will be proficient in teaching spay/neuter, minor surgery, and dental procedures. The ideal applicant will have clinical teaching experience as well as board certification or eligibility by an AVMA-recognized veterinary specialty organization.
