Duties & Responsibilities:
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). This faculty position will provide teaching, mentoring, and supervision to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents and undergraduate dental students in patient care and in preparation for a career in private practice. Primary teaching responsibilities will be centered on practice management and operations. Participation in faculty practice and research is emphasized. Academic rank, tenure eligibility, and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications. Additional incentive salary arrangements will be available through the faculty practice plan.
The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 132-year history, Virginia’s only dental school offers opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through its Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) program, graduate specialty training programs, and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and one of the oldest dental schools in the United States, founded in 1893. It is one of six health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching:
Faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system that includes graduate and professional education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty is expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, teaching, scholarship, and creative expression. Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching of pre-doctoral students and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery post-doctoral residents.
Clinical:
Faculty member will provide teaching and leadership roles in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinics and operating rooms, seeing patients, working with residents and students, and working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best business practices and increase clinic productivity.
Research:
Faculty members may participate in research protocols and will work collaboratively with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery research programs and investigators.
Service:
Faculty member will serve on departmental and other university committees as necessary, and in their professional field.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications
- DDS or DMD degree
- Completion of an approved OMFS residency program
- Eligibility for licensure in Virginia
- Board-certified or an active candidate for certification
- Ability to teach practice management through clinical and didactic experiences to pre-doctoral students and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery post-doctoral residents
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to future dental practitioners, or a commitment to acquire and develop such ability that incorporates adult learning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning, and critical thinking
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning and discovery, or a commitment to do so
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technologies
Preferred Qualifications
- Oral surgery teaching experience with graduate dental students and post-doctoral residents preferred
- Advanced skills in both outpatient and inpatient oral and maxillofacial surgery are preferred
