Job Description

The Assistant/Associate Provost is a senior administrator and is part of the leadership team for academic affairs and assists the Executive Vice President and Provost in the operation of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. Areas of responsibility include matters related to academic integrity, planning, faculty affairs, and academic leadership. The Assistant/Associate Provost works in all ways to ensure that quality educational programs are provided to students and is an important liaison in communicating and collaborating with administrators, faculty, students, and other constituents of the University. The Assistant/Associate Provost reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Job Duties:

  • Assist in policy development and processes in relationship to the University’s mission, faculty handbook requirements, state and federal regulations, and trends in higher education.
  • Serves as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Institutional Accreditation Liaison.
  • Reviews and presents proposed curricular revisions to the faculty as the Chair of the Committee on the Instructional Program.
  • Coordinates plans for all Faculty institute initiatives.
  • Organizes activities sponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence, to include Academic Excellence Workshops and HU Faculty Mentoring Program.
  • Assures fairness and the application of appropriate procedures by assisting with academic employee grievances and other faculty personnel issues through investigating, gathering information, and reporting findings to the Provost.
  • Conducts interviews with all prospective faculty members by working closely with the Dean of each school within the University system.
  • Improves leadership and administrative abilities in academic units by assisting in mentoring and evaluating academic directors supporting endeavors that assist academic directors in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.
  • Promotes a positive image and maintains effective relationships for the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost by representing the Executive Vice President and Provost at various meetings, communicating with University administrators, faculty, staff, and students in matters related to undergraduate education, and leading or serving on selected University committees and task forces.
  • Facilitates and promotes a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills of all cultures or backgrounds.
  • Ensures that miscellaneous projects related to academic affairs are completed in the best interest of the University by accepting and accomplishing those tasks which are delegated by the Executive Vice President and Provost.
  • Oversees faculty elections in collaboration with the chairperson for the Committee or Committees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership ability is required, including a demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with University administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience in campus-wide administrative activities.
  • Commitment to professional, traditional education and scholarship.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

Requirements:

  • A doctorate earned from an accredited university
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in academic administration at or above an assistant dean or dean level.
  • Must possess a record of research, scholarship, and teaching accomplishments equal to the merit appointment of a tenured full professor.
  • Must show demonstrated success working collaboratively with faculty and academic leaders and be knowledgeable in higher educational policy and governance.
