Assistant Athletic Trainer (Athletic Trainer I)
Under the guidance of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Medicine, the Assistant Athletic Trainer plays a critical role in the health and performance of student athletes. This position is responsible for the comprehensive delivery of athletic training services, including the prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assistant Athletic Trainer 1 will work directly with the Men's Football program.
- Assistant Athletic Trainer 2 will work directly with the Women's Lacrosse program.
- Develop and implement effective injury prevention and rehabilitation programs.
- Assess and manage athletic injuries with professionalism and care.
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with coaching staff regarding injury status and treatment plans.
- Advise student-athletes on strategies to maintain peak physical condition.
- Perform ongoing evaluations to ensure optimal physical health and readiness.

Position Information:
- This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2026, with the possibility of reappointment.
- This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. (Ability to travel to away contests)
- The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Education and Experience: Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.
Key Qualifications:
- Current knowledge of medical supply vendors, quality, and costs.
- Must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other health professionals.
- Experience with the following Equipment: Open and closed kinetic chain post-injury rehabilitation equipment, Electrotherapeutic modalities, Cervical traction and lumbar traction, Various types of exercise equipment in the rehabilitation of athletic injuries, including Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Medicat Electronic Health Record (EHR), Telephone, fax, copier, Drive a state-owned passenger van.
- Software: Athletic training-related injury tracking programs or other electronic health record systems.
- Experience in Football or a team sport at collegiate, international, and/or professional team level as a certified Athletic Trainer for two to five years (include a graduate assistantship).
- Experience in Lacrosse or a team sport at collegiate, international, and/or professional team level as a certified Athletic Trainer for two to five years (include a graduate assistantship).
- Prior experience performing inventory, budget, and insurance duties in a sports medicine environment.
Licenses/Certifications Required:
- Possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine.
- Must be able to obtain a California driver's license within 10 days of hire.
- SDSU Safe Driver Program within one month of hire.
Compensation and Benefits: San Diego State University offers competitive compensation, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth.
Compensation: Salary is based on your experience, education, and qualifications, within the department's budget and equity guidelines. CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,213 - $8,130/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $4,213/month.
