Department Summary: The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) promotes excellence in research at the University of Oregon. Research, both basic and applied, is fundamental to the mission of the University and is essential to Oregon's economic and civic vitality. OVPRI is committed to enhancing these efforts by providing administrative and financial support for sponsored programs, including identification of funding opportunities, proposal submission, research compliance, and contracts and grant administration. OVPRI supports interdisciplinary research centers and essential core facilities and emboldens innovation and economic development through strategic partnering and technology transfer initiatives. Research Core Facilities' mission is to advance transformative excellence in research, innovation, and graduate education. As part of that mission, the Office of the Vice President for Research & Innovation recognizes that faculty research success is often dependent on specialized facilities that provide access to a particular type of research capacity, such as equipment, material, data acquisition, data analysis, consultation or expertise, and other services.
Position Summary: The Assistant Business Manager provides essential financial, business, and regulatory services to the research core facilities, including Lewis Center for Neuroimaging (LCNI), CAMCOR, Genomics and Cell Characterization Core Facility (GC3F), Terrestrial Animal Care Services (TeACS), Aquatic Animal Care Services (AqACS), Greenhouse Facility, OFAD, OARL, and other research cores. This role supports the Business Manager for RCBS and works closely with faculty, staff, researchers, and external partners to ensure efficient operations and compliance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines. Responsibilities include financial oversight, administrative coordination, human resources support, facility scheduling, and contract management. The position performs coordinative work in day-to-day operations management of the Research Core Facilities, supporting administrative and financial staff, and serves as acting budget authority when the Business Manager is unavailable. The role requires regular collaboration with faculty, staff, and external partners to support research activities and ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines. The Assistant Business Manager ensures seamless business processes, facilitates research operations, and provides analysis and recommendations to leadership to ensure efficient, compliant, and customer-oriented operations.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or related field, OR 5 years of administrative experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
- 3 yrs of experience developing pricing or costing models for internal services or departments (e.g., IT, HR, facilities, or other support services).
- 1 year of budget management experience.
- Experience managing and prioritizing multiple competing demands in a research or technical environment.
Professional Competencies:
- Strong software skills, including advanced proficiency with spreadsheets and database systems (e.g., Excel, Word, financial systems).
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret and apply financial, administrative, and compliance policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with the University of Oregon or comparable higher education financial and administrative systems, such BANNER or COGNOS.
- Familiarity with research facility operations and recharge center compliance.
- Knowledge of contract management and research protocol processes.
