Description:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of University Advising, the Advising Dean is a member of the Center for University Advising (CUA), which is responsible for non-major academic advising for undergraduate students from orientation through graduation. This is an on-site position. This position may require occasional evening and/or weekend work.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as an advising dean to an assigned group of students across all class years, from the point of entry through to graduation.
- Assists the Pre-Health Advisor with Pre-Health initiatives, including Pre-Health Interviews, the Pre-Health Portfolio and Pre-Health programming.
- Assists in the planning and implementation of advising registration events.
- Assists in the supervision of 18 Peer Advisors.
- Coordinates block registration for STEM students with Registrar, faculty and Honors College.
- Helps lead New Student Orientation initiatives including advising incoming students during the orientation programs as well as supporting Undergraduate Admissions events .
- Advise incoming students during the orientation programs as well as supporting Undergraduate Admissions events.
- Advisees include at-risk populations including students on academic probation, scholarship at-risk, under academic review, students requiring a Satisfactory Academic Progress plan and in danger of becoming at-risk.
- Work collaboratively with other campus support services such as Student Access Services (SAS), Hofstra International Programs (HIP), and the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) to support students.
- Proactively maintains contact with advisees, providing updates and guidance.
- Collaborate with the retention staff in monitoring academic progress of students and communicating with faculty as appropriate.
- Serve as drop-in advisor for quick questions and assists with front desk triage when needed.
- Meets with prospective students seeking guidance and information about the University and academic programs
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree required
- At least two or more years of experience in advising, counseling, or in related fields in a higher education setting or equivalent combination of education and experience
- An established record of accomplishment promoting student development programs and building positive relationships
- Excellent interpersonal, human relations, teaching/presenting and problem-solving skills
- A collaborative disposition and posses the ability to think both critically and strategically
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
Preferred Qualifications:
2-3 years advising, counselor or comparable experience; with data systems, such as Ellucian Banner and EAB/Navigate, and Degree Works
