Job Description
This position provides guidance, leadership, and direct supervision to our in-house design staff. Responsibilities include assessment of project requests and assignment of project managers and design staff to address customer needs. This position acts as a resource for direct reports and establishes priorities and schedules for in-house design staff. This position coordinates design efforts with construction services to ensure smooth transition of projects from design to construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, support, and direct supervision to in-house design staff of architects, engineers, designers, and draftsmen to achieve customer and project goals in managing scope, schedule, and budget for all projects
- Provide design direction and allocate university resources to design staff to guide projects and complete the designs
- Lead, mentor, and manage engineers, architects, and designers to foster collaboration, respect, innovation, and accountability
- Act as the main point of contact for project design requests from campus departments and administration
- May serve as a project manager for capital and non-capital projects as needed
- Develop and implement policies, standards, procedures, and training for in-house design staff
- Balance daily design production with improvements in design and process efficiency
- Work with staff to improve and create templates and standards to streamline the design process
- Review capital and non-capital design documents, schedules, and estimates for accuracy, quality, and compliance with university design guidelines and requirements
- Coordinate and collaborate with construction services and in-house construction to ensure seamless hand-off of projects and customer communication from design to construction
- Requires familiarity with ICC codes, university design standards, design requirements and the ability to implement design solutions that are code compliant, cost effective and practical to construct
- Lead efforts to recruit, coach, and retain a high-performance design staff
- Perform administrative functions, such as reviewing or writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing policies and procedures, or purchasing materials or services
- May perform consultant selection and engage external consultants as required and appropriate to meet project goals and supplement internal capacity as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Licensure or certification may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registration as an Architect or Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri, or the ability to obtain licensure by comity within 6 mos. of the date of hire
- A minimum of three years’ experience directing and leading multi-faceted design teams that are responsible for design of building renovation projects
- Five or more years as a Professional Engineer or Licensed Architect with experience producing design and construction documents for renovation projects
- Experience leading a university or consulting firm design team which includes managing multiple professionals to complete building design projects for clients and customers with complex requirements and needs
- Broad architectural and/or engineering design and construction document production and review experience
- Oracle Primavera Cloud or other CPM software and schedule creation and management experience
- Experience scheduling and leveling design resources to create and maintain design schedules and meet design deadlines
- PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) or PMP-CP certification
