Essential Job Duties:
Join our team as the Assistant Director for Materials Support, where you'll provide strategic leadership for the university's materials support operations, including centralized shipping and receiving, warehouse management, and surplus property services. In this role, you'll lead initiatives that improve operational efficiency, support campus sustainability, and ensure the effective management of university resources. You'll oversee a dedicated team, manage complex operations, and collaborate with partners across the university and state agencies to deliver exceptional service.
What You'll Do
Direct Operations
- Direct daily warehouse operations, including receiving, storage, distribution, inventory management, and facility operations.
- Oversee surplus property services, ensuring compliant, efficient, and customer-focused disposal and resale of university assets.
- Manage warehouse space utilization, facility maintenance, and operational safety while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Develop and expand innovative programs that promote sustainability, including recycling, repurposing, and reuse initiatives.
Manage Financial Resources
- Prepare and oversee the department's operating budget, monitor financial performance, and forecast revenue.
- Establish pricing strategies for warehouse services, surplus property, and retail operations based on market analysis.
- Approve purchasing transactions and ensure accurate reconciliation of financial and inventory records.
Lead and Develop Teams
- Recruit, mentor, and support permanent and seasonal staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performing work environment.
- Manage staffing resources, coordinate temporary workforce needs, and maintain business continuity plans.
- Promote a strong culture of safety by ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, and university standards.
Build Partnerships
- Serve as the university's primary liaison to the North Carolina Department of Administration State and Federal Surplus Property Offices, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
- Collaborate with Asset Management and campus partners to improve inventory systems, streamline processes, and enhance service delivery.
- Educate, advise, and support departments on surplus property procedures and best practices.
Drive Innovation
- Develop policies and operational strategies that improve efficiency and strengthen customer service.
- Research industry trends to identify new services, optimize warehouse operations, and enhance sustainability efforts.
- Analyze operational data and present recommendations that support informed decision-making.
This position plays a vital role in supporting the university's operations by ensuring materials, facilities, and surplus assets are managed efficiently, responsibly, and sustainably. Your leadership will help maximize the value of university resources, strengthen operational excellence, and advance campus-wide sustainability initiatives while delivering outstanding service to the university community.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Minimum Experience/Education:
- Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of experience in logistics/materials management (including at least 1 year in a supervisory/lead capacity); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience in warehouse and logistics management, including warehouse operations, receiving and re-delivery processes, inventory control, facility maintenance, and vehicle fleet management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead warehouse operations and staff, with strong decision-making, problem-solving, customer service, and communication skills.
- Proven success implementing process improvements and using warehouse performance metrics (KPIs) to drive operational efficiency and continuous improvement.
- Proficiency with warehouse management systems (WMS), databases, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office, with the ability to effectively leverage technology and business tools to achieve organizational goals.
- Strong analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to identify operational issues, develop practical solutions, and ensure adherence to warehouse management best practices.
Required License or Certification:
- Valid Driver's License required.
- NCDL within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain a Forklift Certification within 3 months of employment (on-site training provided).
