The College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI)

The CMDI Student Success & Advising unit advances student
learning, persistence, engagement, and graduation through
well-rounded, developmental advising and student success
initiatives, and career readiness programming.
The Assistant Director of Advising and Intra-University Transfer
(IUT) serves as a key member of the CMDI Advising Leadership Team
and reports to the Director of Academic Advising and Student
Success. This position provides leadership for the Intra-University
Transfer program into CMDI and for CMDI’s academic minors. This
role collaborates closely with academic departments, faculty,
staff, and campus partners to support student success and
strengthen the student experience from matriculation through
graduation.
This position directly supervises professional advising staff and
is responsible for the strategic leadership, assessment, and
continuous improvement of the college’s IUT and minor programs. The
Assistant Director develops and implements initiatives that support
enrollment management, student retention, academic success, and
operational effectiveness across CMDI.
This role also supports the operationalization of unit strategic
goals and aligns advising initiatives with college and campus-wide
priorities established by the CMDI Assistant Dean of Student
Success.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Academic Operations & Program Management
- IUT Program Management
- Under the direction of the Director of Academic Advising and
Student Success, provide strategic leadership and oversight for
CMDI’s IUT program, including processing, policy implementation,
enrollment planning, assessment, and operational management for the
summer, fall and spring cycles to ensure accuracy, consistency, and
compliance with university and college policies.
Develop, evaluate, and recommend updates to CMDI IUT
procedures, and admission criteria in partnership with college
leadership to support enrollment goals and student success
outcomes.
Serve as the primary resource and subject-matter expert on CMDI
IUT policies for campus partners, including the Office of the
Registrar and the campus-wide student success community.
Act as the lead advisor and key point of contact for
prospective CMDI IUT students, offering expertise on IUT policies,
procedures, and degree requirements, and initial degree
planning.
Provide training on CMDI degree programs and IUT policies and
requirements to campus partners.
Cultivate and sustain strong working relationships across the
campus community to enhance collaboration, communication, and
support for CMDI IUT students.
Develop and manage outreach efforts for students identified as
admitted, on-track, or denied providing proactive guidance on
advising and registration topics.
Design and implement advising resources for prospective IUT
students and campus partners in advising, such as IUT curriculum
guides.
Contribute on the campus IUT committee along with the Director
of Academic Advising and Student Success.
Partner with the Director of Academic Advising and Student
Success to maintain and update all IUT advising and student success
webpages and Canvas modules.
Provide leadership through the assessment and reporting of IUT
enrollment data and trends. Share this information with advising
and college leadership to support long-term planning, enrollment
management, and student retention and success goals.
Coordinate with Director of Academic Advising &Student
Success on advisor assignments for incoming IUT students.
Collaborate with department course schedulers, ensure courses
identified as “On-Track” have the appropriate requisites prior to
each registration period.
Minor Management
- Act as Lead Advisor for non-CMDI students pursuing a CMDI
minor.
- Provide strategic oversight and stewardship of CMDI’s academic
minors.
- Monitor enrollment trends, student demand, and completion data
for CMDI minors and provide recommendations regarding growth
opportunities, resource needs, and program effectiveness.
- Manage the college’s declaration process for CMDI minors,
including reviewing and updating student records.
- Support the launch of new CMDI minors including the promotion
and development of advising & student resources, as well as the
promotion of current minors to campus partners.
- Collaborate with colleges, schools, and programs to promote
CMDI minors.
- Coordinate with departments to provide student data related to
minors.
- Process Undergraduate Student Petitions
- Support the processing of college-wide student petitions
including late drops, course substitutions, credit overload, and
independent studies. Collaborate with the CMDI Advising Leadership
Team on review and decision-making processes, department chairs,
and the Registrar’s Office to facilitate petition review and
implementation.
Student Advising and Advisor Support
- CMDI Major Advising
- Maintain a limited advising caseload of 50-150 CMDI students
and provide comprehensive, developmental advising to support
student persistence, retention, and academic success.
- Conduct proactive outreach and engagement with students who may
not actively seek advising support.
- Use advising protocols, student success technologies, and
campus systems to provide effective advising services.
- Provide advising coverage and operational support for advising
staff as needed.
- Supports New Student Orientation and other recruitment and
retention activities as well as provide occasional evening/weekend
hours to support strategic College-wide and campus programming as
assigned.
- IUT Advising
- Help prospective IUT students assess their interests, values,
personal and academic goals as they explore and learn about the
different degree programs offered in CMDI.
- Maintain weekly afternoon drop-in hours for prospective IUT
students and offer additional drop-in hours as needed.
- Maintain sufficient individual advising appointment
availability (typically 8-10 appointments) for prospective IUT
students each week, adjusting availability during peak advising
periods.
- Offer group advising workshops for prospective or newly
admitted IUT students.
- Minor Advising
- Maintain a caseload of non-CMDI students in all CMDI
minors.
- Offer limited individual advising appointments for non-CMDI
students in CMDI minors.
- Conduct proactive outreach to students in the minors as
needed.
Supervision and Staff Leadership
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate full-time professional staff
members and student success personnel.
- Establish performance expectations, conduct mid-cycle coaching
conversations, and support professional growth planning for
supervised staff.
- Provide oversight for assigned programmatic areas including
resource planning and allocation in collaboration with the Director
of Academic Advising & Student Success and the Assistant Dean
of Student Success.
- Consult with the Director of Academic Advising & Student
Success and the Assistant Dean of Student Success regarding
significant resource allocation adjustments throughout the planning
cycle.
- Manage expenditures, Procurement Card transactions,
reconciliations, and related fiscal responsibilities in accordance
with university policies.
- Support strategy, planning, operational effectiveness, and
continuous improvement with supervised functional areas.
- Assist with the review and processing of student petitions,
including late drops, course substitutions, grade appeals, credit
overload requests, independent studies, research assistantships,
and incomplete agreements.
- Support the coordination and resolution of student and family
concerns with professionalism, care, and sensitivity.
- Participate in the Advising Leadership Team to support
strategy, planning, operational decision-making, cross-functional
collaboration, and the advancement of student success initiatives
across the unit.
Professional Development & Duties
- Proactively develop and maintain currency of knowledge of
standard methodologies in academic advising and student success and
higher education administration through conferences, mentoring,
workshops, professional associations, and research.
- Participate in unit and leadership meetings and contribute to
the continuous improvement, development, and implementation of unit
standard processes.
- Perform additional duties and special projects assigned to
support the mission and goals of CMDI and the Student Success and
Advising unit.
What You Should Know
Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm, with occasional evening and weekend
hours; hybrid modality.
What We Can Offer
- The salary range for this position is $79,000 - $84,000
annually.
- Relocation stipend may be offered based on department
guidelines

What We Would Like You to Have
- Master’s degree and six years of related professional
experience.

- Knowledge of advising and degree audit technologies, including
Transferology, CU-SIS, and Salesforce.
