Description:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Public Safety, the Assistant Director of Compliance and Investigations serves in a leadership role within the department, supporting the safety of the campus community and its visitors. This role is responsible for conducting investigations of incidents reported to the Department of Public Safety, particularly those related to Title IX, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and the Clery Act. The Assistant Director may be required to testify at University disciplinary hearings and will conduct training on investigative procedures and the legal requirements governing investigations. This position requires availability during evenings, weekends, and special events, based on the needs of the department and the University.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as the Clery Compliance Officer with primary responsibility for compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, including but not limited to the compilation of all crime data, the review of all incident reports, and the daily publication of a Public Crime Log.
- Conducts Campus Security Authority (CSA) training and prepares the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, including reporting crime statistics annually to the Department of Education.
- Conducts thorough, fair, prompt, equitable, and impartial investigations into all incidents, including but not limited to Title IX complaints, Student Policy violations, and other reports made to Public Safety.
- Provides training and guidance to all Public Safety employees and other members of the Hofstra community on thorough, fair, prompt, equitable, and impartial investigations, as well as other related topics.
- Provides training for Public Safety student employees on their roles regarding reporting and Title IX.
- Develops and facilitates educational presentations to faculty, staff, and students.
- Coordinates with other University departments such as Student Enrollment, Engagement and Success (SEES), Dean of Students, Office of Community Standards, Residence Life, Parent and Family Programs, New Student Orientation, Campus Access, Commuting Student Services, Counseling Services, Admissions, Title IX, and Emergency Management/Fire Safety on issues involving Public Safety.
- Represents the department at parent orientation, student orientation, admission open houses, and admitted student events. Serves on University committees as requested, including Welcome Week, Parent and Family Weekend, SGA-sponsored programs, search committees, and University Commencement.
- Reviews departmental information for annual publications, both internal to the department and external, including the University Bulletin and the Parent and Family Handbook.
- Develops and presents in-service training for Public Safety Officers.
- Maintains credentials for Clery and Title IX compliance through membership in professional organizations such as NACCOP and SUNY SCI, and through attendance at workshops, seminars, and annual trainings.
- Reviews incident reports daily for accuracy and follow-up action.
- Prepares Public Safety and related reports, including but not limited to case records, interview notes, training records, and other documents as required.
- Presents facts of investigations in University disciplinary hearings and carries out investigative responsibilities including reviewing video, analyzing card swipes, and conducting interviews.
- Participates in the CARES Team.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Three to five years of relevant work experience.
- Outstanding verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with great attention to detail.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse campus constituencies.
- Strong critical thinking, reasoning, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to be on call and respond to campus emergencies.
- Proficiency in programs such as Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Prior experience with sexual misconduct investigations is a plus.
