Assistant Director, Philanthropy (Administrator I), Office of Philanthropic Giving
The Assistant Director of Philanthropy (ADoP) is an emerging fundraising professional focused on securing leadership annual gifts and identifying prospects for major and planned gifts that support university priorities, especially initiatives advancing student success, access, equity, and academic excellence. Reporting to the Senior Director of Philanthropy, the ADoP will work closely with senior leadership and the Advancement team to cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of leadership annual and early major gift donors. This externally focused role emphasizes strategic relationship-building and effective solicitation. Success in this position will be measured by meeting financial goals, contact metrics, and overall contribution to the university's fundraising efforts, in collaboration with University Advancement and cross-campus partners.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage a portfolio of 150-300 leadership annual donors and major gift prospects ($5,000+).
- Develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
- Partner with university leadership and academic deans on college- and unit-specific priorities.
- Prepare proposals, case statements, correspondence, and other donor materials.
- Coordinate and participate in donor visits and events on- and off-campus.
- Collaborate with alumni relations, annual giving, and communications to enhance engagement.
- Maintain accurate donor records in the university's CRM system.
- Partner with faculty, staff, and departments to promote and support philanthropic efforts.
- Identify funding opportunities, collaboration areas, and research initiatives.
- Work with department chairs and program directors to assess and prioritize funding needs.
- Ensure best practices in donor stewardship, recognition, and oversight of endowments and awards.
- Collaborate with Strategic Communications to market programs through publications, events, and donor recognition.
- Represent the university and the division within the community by attending events, engaging with local organizations, and participating on community-based boards.
- Plan and implement sponsorship programs and activities that increase the university's visibility and philanthropic engagement.
- Collaborate with departments and staff across campus to develop, write, and submit sponsorship proposals.
- Support general donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship as a member of the University Advancement team.
- Contribute to strategic planning, goal setting, event planning, and project status meetings within the division.
- Maintain the highest standards of development procedures using appropriate forms, reports, databases, and protocols.
- Collaborate with annual giving, alumni relations, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, and other advancement staff to ensure seamless service to all university donors and supporters.
- Partner with advancement services and prospect management staff to maintain accurate, up-to-date, and secure donor, prospect, and alumni data.
- Coordinate with the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations to prepare and submit grant applications, case statements, and proposals where appropriate.
- Ensure timely and effective follow-up with donors and prospects. Submit technical and contact reports, press releases, and communications materials as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and 2-5 years of professional and supervisory experience, including a minimum of 1 year in fundraising for higher education or other non-profits. Alternate experience in leadership positions or sales/marketing roles may be considered equivalent to specific fundraising experience, as we value a diverse set of skills and experiences.
Required Qualifications
- Proven customer service and relationship building experience.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, willingness to learn BSR Advance database (or equivalents) and Crescendo gift planning software (or equivalents).
- Willingness to learn about planned/deferred giving vehicles such as wills, life income plans, gifts of unusual assets, beneficiary designations.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,417 - $7,083 per month. The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Eligible employees are also able to participate in the fee waiver education program.
Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Exempt/At-will. Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends. Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
