Job Description
Summary/objective
The Assistant Director/Academic Coordinator assists the Executive Director with the implementing the goals of the Robert E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. Responsibilities include practicing academic coaching, ensuring Junior and Senior McNair scholars participate in yearly scholarly activities, participating in research activities, enrolling students in graduate school the fall semester immediately upon graduating from SUNO, and reporting on SUNO McNair alumni related to enrollment in graduate school attainment of Ph.D. within ten years of graduating from SUNO.
This position is funded 100% by the federal TRIO/Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program grant. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding.
Essential functions
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
- Recruits SUNO Juniors and Seniors to the Ronald E. McNair Program, while maintaining 25 scholars annually.
- Collaborates and monitors McNair faculty mentors and supervises McNair tutors.
- Assist scholars in securing graduate school fellowships or other financial support for graduate school.
- Motivates scholars to utilize all services of the program, regularly.
- Reports, plans and oversees scholarly activities, research activities, cultural educational enrichment activities, and faculty McNair mentoring activities.
- Develops and implements individual program plans for scholars.
- Develops and implements various scholarly workshops on graduate school placement, research, and scholarships/fellowships.
- Ensures all program objectives are met annually by providing intrusive and intentional services to McNair Scholars, regularly.
- Maintains McNair scholars’ records, collect data and submit Annual Performance (APR) to the United States Department of Education.
- Maintains data on McNair program in Blumen, maintain social media platforms, and practice excellent customer service and confidentiality.
- Represents the Executive Director in various matters and providing input.
- Serves as liaison between Director and faculty/staff members.
- All other duties as assigned.

- Knowledgeable of graduate school placement, assessments, financial aid, and fellowship opportunities and procedures.
- Ability to oversee the daily activities of the McNair scholars and mentors as well as make daily program decisions as they arise and make sound judgement as necessary to ensure program objectives are met, annually.
- Demonstrate excellent people, oral communication and customer service skills.
- Have the aptitude to interact with individuals in a professional, diplomatic and courteous manner even when dealing with callers and/or visitors who may be difficult or upset.
- Be effective working as part of a high functioning team in a fast-paced environment.
- Have the proven ability to handle multiple competing priorities and to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands.
- Have the proven ability to work with confidential and sensitive information and material in a proactive and discreet manner.
- Utilize independent judgment, problem solving and decision making in order to respond to constituents and represent the office in an effective and appropriate manner.
- Demonstrate advanced skills for Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams, and Outlook.

Physical demands
Ability to sit/stand/walk at will; Ability to climb stairs; Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; Ability to use a keyboard; and Ability to lift or carry up to 10 pounds.
Travel required
Travel between offices may be required to recruit University students.
Required education and experience
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or another related field.
- At least five years of work experience in planning, implementing, managing, and assessing collegiate or similar scholarly programs.
Preferred education and experience
- Experience in working with TRIO programs/similar programs serving socio-economically disadvantaged students, specifically first generation, low-income, disabled, and/or underrepresented students is highly preferred.
