GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Johnson C. Smith University seeks an assistant women's flag
football coach to support the head coach in all facets of a CIAA
varsity women's flag football program. JCSU is a charter
participant in CIAA women's flag football, which launched in spring
2025 and becomes a full varsity conference sport in 2026-27, and
the University's Irwin Belk Complex has hosted the CIAA Women's
Flag Football Championship. The assistant coach will help build a
competitive, academically focused program through on-field
coaching, recruiting, student-athlete development, and day-to-day
program operations, in full compliance with NCAA Division II, CIAA,
and university rules and regulations.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Head Coach in planning and conducting practices,
strength and conditioning sessions, team meetings, and film
study.
Assume primary coaching responsibility for an assigned unit
(offense, defense, or position group) in the 7-on-7 format.
Contribute to game planning, opponent scouting, and in-game
strategy; coach from the sideline during all contests, including
the CIAA Championship tournament.
Teach and reinforce flag football fundamentals and advanced
concepts: route concepts, quarterback play, coverage schemes, rush
technique, flag pulling, and special situations.
Break down game and practice film and deliver feedback to
individual student-athletes.
Identify, evaluate, and recruit academically qualified
prospective student-athletes from high school girls' flag football
programs, club/NFL FLAG teams, and transfers, consistent with NCAA
and CIAA recruiting rules.
Assist with campus visits, prospect correspondence, and the
maintenance of recruiting databases.
Support skills clinics, prospect camps, and community outreach
that grow the recruiting pipeline for the program.
Monitor academic progress in coordination with the head coach,
athletic academic support staff, and faculty; support class
attendance, study hall, and eligibility.
Mentor student-athletes and promote personal growth,
leadership, and community engagement consistent with the
university's mission.
Foster a positive, inclusive team culture that emphasizes
accountability, respect, and competitive excellence.
Know, adhere to, and enforce all NCAA Division II, CIAA, and
Johnson C. Smith University rules, policies, and procedures,
including Title IX and student-athlete welfare requirements.
Complete the annual NCAA coaches certification exam and all
required compliance education.
Report any known or suspected violations immediately to the
Head Coach and Compliance Office.
Assist with practice and game-day logistics, team travel,
scheduling, and budget tracking.
Maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment (flags, belts,
balls, field markers) and coordinate with the equipment and
facilities staff.
Participate in fundraising, alumni, and community events on
behalf of the program and the Department of Athletics.
Assist with program communications, social media, and promotion
in coordination with Athletic Communications.
Perform other duties as assigned by the head coach or director
of athletics.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum qualifications include a minimum of two (2) years of flag
football coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, club,
or youth level; working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, or
the demonstrated ability to acquire this knowledge quickly; strong
communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work
effectively with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, alumni,
and the Charlotte community; a valid driver’s license and the
ability to drive university vehicles for team travel; current First
Aid/CPR/AED certification, or the ability to obtain certification
before the start of practice; and the ability to work evenings,
weekends, and travel as required by the competition and recruiting
calendar. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree from
an accredited institution; prior collegiate coaching experience,
particularly in women’s flag football or an NCAA/NAIA emerging
sport; playing experience in flag football or football at the
collegiate or high school level; recruiting experience and
familiarity with the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic girls’ flag
football landscape; and experience with video and recruiting
platforms such as Hudl. The position also requires the physical
ability to remain on your feet for extended periods, demonstrate
drills, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and lift or move
equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
