Salary: $55,000 - $62,000
The Assistant Men's Basketball Coach reports directly to the Head Men's Basketball Coach and assists in all aspects of operating a competitive NCAA Division II men's basketball program. The position supports the recruitment, development, retention, and academic success of student-athletes while ensuring compliance with all NCAA, CIAA, and Bowie State University rules and regulations.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Head Men's Basketball Coach in planning, organizing, and administering all phases of the men's basketball program.
- Assist with practice planning, player skill development, game preparation, scouting, and opponent analysis.
- Provide on-court instruction and individual player development sessions.
- Monitor the academic progress, retention, and overall well-being of student-athletes.
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes who can succeed academically, athletically, and socially at Bowie State University.
- Assist with scheduling recruiting visits and coordinating recruiting communications.
- Analyze game film and prepare scouting reports using video analysis software.
- Support team travel operations, equipment management, and game-day responsibilities.
- Assist with community engagement initiatives, youth clinics, camps, fundraising efforts, and alumni relations activities.
- Ensure compliance with all NCAA, CIAA, University, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist in fostering a culture of discipline, accountability, academic achievement, and competitive excellence.
- Participate in departmental meetings, professional development opportunities, and strategic planning initiatives.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of one (1) year of collegiate coaching, professional coaching, recruiting, or related basketball experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basketball fundamentals, player development, and recruiting.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel extensively as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in Sports Administration, Education, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience coaching or recruiting at the NCAA Division II level.
- Knowledge of NCAA Division II and CIAA rules and regulations.
- Experience utilizing basketball video analysis platforms such as Synergy, Hudl, or similar systems.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit and develop student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
- Experience organizing camps, clinics, community outreach, and fundraising initiatives.
- Strong commitment to student-athlete academic success and personal development.
- Strong knowledge of NCAA rules, compliance, and athletics administration.
- Experience at an NCAA institution and/or HBCU preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, student-athletes, faculty, staff, alumni, and community stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership, integrity, and professionalism.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, recruiting databases, and video analysis software.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to recruit highly qualified student-athletes.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Some evenings, weekends and travel are required.
