Assistant Nurse Manager
Position Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager for the Inpatient Units, Acute Psychiatric Services (APS) and Children's Crisis Intervention Services (CCIS) within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The primary purpose of the Assistant Nurse Manager is to be responsible for supervising the provision and management of patient care services for an assigned shift or unit on a consistent basis. The ANM serves as a resource for nursing care across the system on an as needed basis and works with other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. The ANM promotes quality patient care, patient safety and customer satisfaction. The ANM serves as the resource person for staff in explaining and executing policy and procedure. The ANM functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team; participates in quality improvement activities, educational activities and supports research endeavors. The role is consistent with the scope and standards outlined by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Assures the completion of admission nursing assessment and ongoing risk assessments in accordance with specific unit standards and regulatory requirements.
- Supervises staff in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating delivery of care.
- Supervises all high risk situations to assure standards of practice are met on a consistent basis.
- Facilitates effective communication inter and intra departmentally to coordinate efforts, resolve operations problems and improve quality of patient care.
- Assists in interpreting and translating the theoretical concepts of nursing into the delivery of nursing services for all age groups.
- Interprets policies and procedures and monitors adherence.
- Plans and implements safe staffing based upon patient acuity and defined staff plan.
- Promotes cost effective utilization of resources, develops yearly budget and controls daily expenses of the units.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Two (2) years of progressively more responsible nursing experience, one (1) of which shall have been in the service to which the candidate is applying.

Position requires standing 2/3 of the time, walking 2/3 of the time, requires sitting 1/3 of the time, use of hands to finger, handle or feel 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms, 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 1/3 of the time, talk or hear over 2/3 of the time. Manual dexterity and intermittent physical exertion when performing job activities.
Work Environment
Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic). Subject to unpredictable situations, patient crises, both medical and psychiatric. Occasionally exposed to patients exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Exposure to blood-borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment. May be exposed to varying or extreme temperatures.

- May be required to drive to other programs, as needed.
