Assistant or Associate Professor and Division Head of Orthodontics
The Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University, is seeking applications from Orthodontic Specialists for a full-time, tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will also be appointed as the Division Head of Orthodontics. The appointment will commence as early as July 1, 2026, or as soon as reasonable possible thereafter.
Orthodontics is a Division in the Faculty’s Department of Dental Clinical Sciences. As Division Head and sole full-time faculty Orthodontist, the successful candidate will be responsible to oversee and implement all orthodontic educational activities within the Faculty, including courses in the DDS Program and course components within the School of Dental Hygiene. Some opportunities may present within other graduate programs as well. Teaching responsibilities of this position will include didactic, preclinical, and clinical teaching and these should be provided in collaboration with part-time orthodontic faculty. Additional expectations include active participation in research and scholarly activity and Faculty service to meet the requirements of a tenure-stream academic position.
Candidates must possess a DDS/DMD and either a Master’s degree or PhD in Orthodontics and be eligible for licensure as an orthodontist by the Nova Scotia Regulator of Dentistry and Dental Assisting. If the candidate has not successfully completed their National Dental Specialty Exam (NDSE) in Orthodontics, as administered by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, they must successfully do so within 12 months of the start date of the position. One day of private practice is permitted, if not operating in private practice, then the position is 5-days per week onsite at the University.
Demonstration of strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Preference will be given to those candidates who possess experience in didactic, preclinical and clinical teaching within a university Orthodontic Program. Preference will also be given to those candidates showing evidence or very strong potential for research and scholarly activity. Finally, strong consideration will be given to individuals who have experience working with patients with clefts and craniofacial difference or who have undertaken formal Cleft/Craniofacial Orthodontic Fellowship training.
Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications, experience, and achievements. The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate a commitment to service including patient care in addition to supporting the University’s efforts in equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility. The successful candidate, based on their experience and training, may be asked to serve on the IWK Health Centre’s Cleft Team.
