Position Description
The McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical) based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) with possible cross appointment at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The successful candidate will join the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the MUHC with possible cross appointment at the Jewish General Hospital. The MUHC consists of five surgeons dedicated to providing the highest standards Cardiac Surgery patient care, research, and education.
The MUHC performs 850 Adult Cardiac Surgical cases with emphasis on complex valvular surgery including, Aortic surgery, Heart failure (ECMO, VAD and Transplant), as well as advanced surgical treatment of coronary disease. Within the Heart Team, we have an active and diverse percutaneous valve. We work closely and collaboratively with Cardiology, Vascular Surgery and Critical Care.
The Division is active in Research (Aortic Biomechanics, Clinical Outcomes, and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) and has an important role in Surgical Education. The MUHC and the JGH are major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery where they will be expected to demonstrate clinical expertise in the surgical management of valvular disease and technical expertise in minimally invasive approach including robotics. The successful candidate’s academic career will also focus on surgical research and clinical outcomes.
The successful candidate will be involved in all academic activities of the Division of Cardiac Surgery and will be expected to engage in and develop an academic practice at the MUHC. The incumbent will participate actively in all clinical activities in the Division of Cardiac Surgery. Fellowship training and/or recognized experience in minimally invasive and/or robotic valvular procedures are essential for the successful candidate. The successful candidate’s major non-clinical focus will be on developing a program of research related to minimally invasive cardiac surgery.
The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Hold a medical degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;
- Have completed Cardiac Surgical training and be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
- Have completed a 2-year Clinical Fellowship with at least one-year in advanced minimally invasive valvular surgery;
- Have additional graduate training (e.g., MSc, PhD) or expertise in surgical research;
- Be committed to, and demonstrate excellence in, clinical care, research, teaching, and innovation;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills at the level needed to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
