The University of Calgary, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a full-time academic position in the areas of clinical legal programming, experiential learning, and legal education. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or Associate Professor (with tenure), and will provide leadership in the Faculty's clinical, advocacy, and moot programs. The anticipated start date for the appointment is July 1, 2026.

Position Description and Associated Responsibilities

This position will provide leadership and oversight for the Faculty's clinical programs by establishing an active research program focused on clinical and experiential learning in legal education. The candidate will be responsible for teaching courses and managing files within the Student Legal Assistance clinical program, as well as contributing to other clinics. The successful candidate must demonstrate the desire and potential to initiate and produce high-impact research and scholarship, as well as the ability to develop into a strong and fully engaged member of the University community. An active research agenda is expected of all members of Faculty, and peer-reviewed research and external research funding are highly valued within the Faculty and for this position.

The successful candidate will also support the Faculty of Law's mooting and externship programs, participate in departmental and university service, and engage the Calgary and Alberta legal communities to foster cooperation and learning opportunities for students. Interested candidates will also have an interest in supporting the Faculty of Law's clinics and clinical courses, and overseeing our moot and externships programs.

Position Requirements:

Candidates must have a JD or LLB degree, together with an advanced degree in Law or a related field and, in most cases, will have completed or be close to completing a PhD, SJD, or its equivalent, in law, education, or a closely related field, at the time of appointment.

Candidates will demonstrate:

  • A proven record of research excellence and publications related to clinical legal education.
  • Excellence in clinical teaching and research, or evidence of the potential to succeed in such teaching and research, with a focus on clinical legal education and/or experiential learning for law students.
  • The strong potential to attract external research funding.
  • An ability to establish effective relationships and to represent and promote the Faculty of Law's clinical and mooting programs at the university, to post-secondary institutions, and within the wider legal community.
  • Leadership experience, ideally in or associated with legal clinics at a post-secondary institution.

The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor level must have a demonstrated track-record of high-quality publications or clear evidence of potential to publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, and excellence in University-level teaching.

The successful candidate at the Associate Professor level must have a demonstrated track-record of sustained high-quality publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, a record of excellence in University-level teaching, and effective graduate student supervision.

Short-listed candidates will be required to provide three confidential letters of reference and their law and graduate transcripts.
