Assistant or Associate Professor in Engineering
Assistant or Associate Professor in Engineering
New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE)
Teach Engineering the Way Engineers Actually Work.
Are you ready to leave the lecture theatre behind? At NMITE (New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering), we donāt just teach engineering: we live it. Weāve replaced traditional silos and closed-book exams with a high-intensity, studio-based model that prioritises ālearning by doing.ā
Having celebrated our first graduating cohort in 2025, we are now entering a major growth phase. We are looking for academics who want to escape the administrative ānoiseā of traditional HE and help us refine the NMITE Way.
What makes this role different?
- The Power of One (block delivery): We teach in blocks. You focus on one module and one cohort of students at a time. No more juggling five different modules across multiple year groups.
- A āNo-Lectureā zone: Our campuses are designed around interactive learning studios and workshops (including The Factory at Blackfriars Campus and Project Workspace at Skylon Campus). You wonāt find traditional lecture theatres here.
- Professional Alignment: Our students work 9-to-5 in a studio environment. Assessment is based on professional outputs ā reports, specifications, presentations, models, simulations, prototypes, etc. ā rather than memory-test exams.
- A Scholarship Haven: NMITE is a living laboratory for engineering education. This is a platform to build a national reputation for pedagogical innovation and scholarly impact.
The Opportunities
We are recruiting for multiple posts. We want to hear from specialists who can lead and grow our capability in:
- Systems Engineering: Systems thinking, requirements, lifecycle, and socio-technical systems.
- Mechanical Engineering: Design, mechanics, thermo-fluids, and manufacturing.
- Control & Robotics: Autonomy, estimation, mechatronics, and real-time systems.
- Electronics & Embedded Systems: Analogue/digital, sensing, power, and communications.
- Materials Science: Selection, characterisation, and sustainable processing.
We are a collaborative faculty. We value colleagues who, alongside their core expertise, are willing to contribute to Programming (Python), Mathematics, Data/AI, or Professional Skills. These are not essential for your application, but they are great bonuses.
Who You Are
You are likely to be an established academic or a senior industry professional with a PhD (or equivalent professional standing). You should be:
- An inclusive facilitator, not just a lecturer: You enjoy coaching student teams and helping them develop technical judgement.
- Collaborative by design: You thrive in an environment where disciplines overlap, and partners (industry and community) are part of the teaching team.
- A lifelong learner: You hold (or are willing to work toward) Fellowship of Advance HE and professional registration (e.g., CEng).
How Youāll Make an Impact
- Lead the learning: Design and deliver immersive engineering blocks up to Masterās level. Your success is measured by the technical confidence and professional growth of your students, facilitated through daily interaction in the studio.
- Bridge the gap with industry: Work alongside our industrial and community partners to co-create real-world challenges that contextualise and develop technical theory within professional practice applications.
- Mentor future engineers: Serve as a personal tutor and coach, supporting studentsā professional and personal growth through timely, constructive feedback and academic guidance.
- Drive institutional growth: Take ownership of a strategic leadership area ā such as employability, outreach, EDI, or admissions ā and represent NMITE in the wider Higher Education sector.
- Advance engineering education: Contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning. You will help disseminate the NMITE Way through pedagogical research, professional networks, and, in time, academic income generation.
What Youāll Bring
The Essentials:
- Expertise: A PhD (or equivalent professional standing) in a relevant engineering field.
- UK Context: A strong understanding of the UK Higher Education environment and the professional standards required for UK engineering accreditation.
- Educational track record: Proven experience in designing and delivering high-quality HE teaching, with a focus on active or problem-based learning.
- Collaborative mindset: A track record of working effectively within productive, multi-disciplinary teams.
- Professional standing: A teaching qualification (or Fellowship of Advance HE), or the commitment to achieve this during your probation.
The āAdded Valueā (Desirable):
- Technical versatility: A willingness to support learning in secondary areas such as Python/programming, mathematics, data/AI, or transferable professional skills.
- Professional registration: Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or a willingness to work towards it).
- Innovation: Experience in developing novel pedagogies or industry-linked curriculum design.
The Benefits
- Salary: Assistant Professor (Ā£41,738āĀ£53,198) / Associate Professor (Ā£54,834āĀ£67,928)
- Time: 30 daysā holiday, plus Bank Holidays, institutional closure days, and your birthday off.
- Career: Personal development budget and a clear promotion pathway.
- Balance: A sustainable, block-based workload and genuine flexible working arrangements. We are a family-friendly employer and welcome applications from those returning from career breaks.
- Security: Comprehensive pension, life assurance, and Westfield Health & Rewards.
- Impact: A culture where your voice is heard and your contribution directly shapes the institution.
