Assistant or Associate Professor of Childhood or Special Education – Tenure Track
Houghton University invites applications for a full-time tenure track appointment in Childhood or Special Education, within the Education Department, at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, starting in the fall semester of 2026. We seek a dynamic educator with expertise in childhood education (Grades 1–6) or inclusive/special education, who is committed to preparing future teachers for state certification.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in our teacher preparation program, with the possibility of also teaching graduate courses. Teaching will occur in person, with some online teaching opportunities.
Responsibilities will include teaching 3-4 courses per semester, advising students, supervising student teaching experiences, participating in departmental collaboration, service, and scholarship.
A successful applicant could come from either a K-12 teaching background or an academic teaching background.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications
The selected candidate will have:
- a terminal degree (PhD or EdD) in Childhood (Elementary) Education, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or closely related field (however candidates who are ABD are encouraged to apply and will be considered)
- mature Christian faith and the ability to integrate their Christian faith into their teaching
- a minimum of 3 years successful K–12 classroom teaching experience
- strong communication and interpersonal skills
- a commitment to excellence and creativity in undergraduate teaching
- an interest and willingness to support and mentor undergraduate students
Preferred qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who:
- have expertise in one or more of the following areas: literacy development, behavioral interventions, assessment, and/or collaboration with families and communities
- hold current credentials in Literacy or Childhood Education, teaching Students with Disabilities, Special Education, or Inclusive Teaching
The Education Department at Houghton is a community of experienced faculty who are passionate about preparing teachers to serve in diverse and inclusive schools. Houghton University’s teacher licensure programs include an intensive field experience prior to a full semester of student teaching, offered locally or globally, as well as other field-based teaching opportunities through coursework. Both full-time and part-time faculty directly supervise students through in-person observations and video technology using GoReact. In addition, the department offers a fully online M.S.Ed. in Literacy, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching, which allows many undergraduates to begin graduate coursework before completing their degree.
Starting salary will be dependent on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. Anticipated Salary Range: $45,000-$56,000.
