The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are seeking to appoint a new Assistant Professor which will be based in the MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, with very close project connections with the International Centre for Eye Health at LSHTM, Makerere University and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. This post is part of the Africa Oculomics Research Programme funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The post-holder must have a doctoral degree in a relevant topic and expertise in ophthalmology and epidemiology.

The main responsibilities include (but not limited to), working closely with colleagues, are:

  • Make substantial contributions to the development of the scientific plan for this Programme.
  • Develop the full protocols and standard operating procedures, including the detailed analysis plan. Coordinate the ethics application process.
  • Manage the development and pilot testing of the field processes and data collection tools.
  • Conduct regular supervisory visits to the General Population Cohort (GPC) study site in Kalungu District, to oversee training, recruitment, data collection, project management and supervise PhD student.
  • Make substantial contributions to the reporting of the research as a member of the core writing team and the dissemination of results.

The post is part-time 14 hours per week, 0.4 FTE and fixed term until 31 March 2028. The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and is available immediately.

The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 7 in the range £53,317 - £61,034 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
