Assistant Professor - Chemistry-Biochemistry

The Clowes Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Butler University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biochemistry. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching that promotes inclusive and equity-minded learning environments for an increasingly diverse student population. Candidates should also be able to propose laboratory-based research projects that can support the department’s strong undergraduate research programs and complement existing expertise in the department.

A Ph.D. in biochemistry, chemical biology, or a closely related molecular life science field is required, with teaching and research interests in the broadly defined area of biochemistry. Teaching responsibilities will include foundational and upper-division courses and laboratories in Biochemistry, as well as potential Special Topics courses in the applicant’s subspecialty. This position will also contribute to the lecture and laboratory components of our collaborative introductory chemistry series. Total teaching load will be approximately nine credits per semester (typically 9-12 contact hours per semester).

Faculty Position Description

Job Duties:

  • Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and advanced Biochemistry lectures and laboratories, General Chemistry lectures and laboratories, or upper-division elective courses and laboratories in biochemistry, chemical biology, or a related field. Total teaching load will be 9 credit hours per semester (typically 9-12 contact hours).
  • Establish a laboratory-based research program in biochemistry, chemical biology, or a closely related molecular life science field. Mentor and oversee undergraduate researchers. Communicate results through peer-reviewed papers, presentations, and other communications appropriate to the discipline. Pursue external funding for research.
  • Provide academic and career advising and mentoring to undergraduate students.
  • Engage with the department, university, and greater STEM community through service and other forms of academic citizenship.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a closely related molecular science field
  • Expertise and research record in biochemistry, chemical biology, or a closely related field
  • A strategy for effective teaching and/or mentoring undergraduate students with a variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences, including those historically marginalized in the sciences.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral and/or professional record.
  • Evidence of engaging teaching at the undergraduate level
  • A laboratory-based research program that can support undergraduate research.
