Position Description
The McGill University Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a Clinician-Scientist at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical). The position is based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).
This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.
The Department of Medicine is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.
Members of the Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Biochemistry are also cross appointed to the Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine which is responsible for the OPTILAB Montreal-MUHC laboratory cluster. There are 15 laboratory sites with nine Medical Biochemists and two Clinical Biochemists in this cluster.
Job Duties

As a Clinician-Scientist, the candidate will be expected to spend a minimum of 50% of their time dedicated to research and develop and maintain an independent and productive research program. The research program is expected to attract external peer reviewed funding (e.g. Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Fonds de Recherche Québec—Santé). Internal startup funding may be available on a competitive basis to a suitable candidate.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the academic mandate of the Division as a Clinician Scientist. The successful candidate must have an active funded research program in a field relevant to Medical Biochemistry and the capability to obtain and maintain external funding. Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is also required.
The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability to communicate effectively and interact with a diverse range of individuals and teams. This individual will join our McGill University Health Centre team of six Medical Biochemists and one Clinical Biochemist. Expertise in a sector of the clinical laboratory is essential. In addition, other responsibilities shared amongst the team include selection, validation and implementation of new analyzers, tests and methods; development and review of biochemistry procedures and quality improvement initiatives; point of case testing; and selection and monitoring of chemistry quality control and proficiency testing programs.
The incumbent will be expected to:
- Participate in the teaching and training of medical residents, medical students and other health professionals;
- Engage in administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to, committee work and development of SOPs at the department/divisional level;
- Participate in departmental/divisional professional activities including, but not limited to, symposia, journal clubs and departmental/divisional rounds;
- Maintain professional standards in accordance with the standards of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and Collège des Médecins du Quebec;
- Participate in service activities of the division including, but not limited to, medical supervision within the laboratory, responding to inquiries and participating in on-call activities.
The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Candidates must:
- Hold an MD degree, a PhD degree, and must have completed specialty training in Medical Biochemistry;
- Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) in Medical Biochemistry;
- Be eligible for licensure in Quebec and hold certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;
- Have at least two additional years of clinical and/or research training in the area of Medical Biochemistry;
- Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
