Assistant Professor - Counselor Education/Clinical Mental Health Clinical Coordinator
Job Description
Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor of Counselor Education/Clinical Mental Health Clinical Coordinator. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position to begin August 2026. In addition to the annual salary, a supplemental summer stipend is available for this position.
The successful candidate will coordinate the clinical mental health fieldwork placements, teach graduate-level counseling classes, supervise counseling students, participate in service activities, and engage in research.
Coordinating responsibilities include developing and maintaining practicum and internship site partnerships, placing students in field experiences, and managing clinical placement policies in alignment with University, CACREP, and state licensure standards. The Clinical Coordinator also establishes new sites, assists students with placements, evaluates site and student experiences, and collaborates with faculty to ensure quality training. Additional coordinating duties include supporting and training site supervisors, responding to placement-related inquiries, and ensuring high-quality clinical experiences for counseling students.
Teaching responsibilities will include graduate courses in the M.S. in Counseling program. Specific courses may include Practicum; Internship; Counseling Techniques; Psychological Assessment & Appraisal; Group Counseling; Counseling Diverse Populations; Couples & Family Counseling; Crisis & Trauma Counseling; Counseling Theories; and other courses in areas of expertise. Summer teaching opportunities are available.
Research activity is required for this position and scholarship activities involving students will be encouraged.
The Department of Psychological Science currently has generous lab space, a counseling lab with suites for private sessions, and a recently opened mental health clinic. In addition, the university has funding opportunities to help support research and teaching equipment expenses.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage clinical field placements for practicum and internship students
- Develop and maintain partnerships with clinical sites; establish new placement opportunities
- Ensure clinical policies align with university, CACREP, and state licensing standards
- Support students in securing placements and analyze site and student experiences
- Collaborate with faculty and site supervisors to maintain high-quality clinical training
- Provide professional development for site supervisors
- Serve as liaison for clinical placement-related inquiries and maintain placement records
- Teach graduate courses in the M.S. in Counseling program
- Advise graduate students
- Provide supervision for graduate students
- Serve on program, department, and university committees
- Engage in research and support student-involved scholarship activities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrate commitment to excellence in graduate-level teaching, clinical supervision, and student mentorship.
- Strong advising skills and ability to support counseling students in academic, clinical, and professional development.
- Capacity to contribute to an active research agenda, with an interest in engaging students in collaborative scholarly activities.
- Knowledge of CACREP accreditation standards and experience with clinical coordination in counselor education, including site development, placement management, and policy implementation.
- Effective collaboration and communication skills to work with faculty, students, site supervisors, and community partners.
- Commitment to fostering respectful learning environments and meeting the diverse needs of students.
- Willingness to teach in various modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid) and at times that accommodate program needs.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to program development and serve on department, college, and university committees.
- Knowledge and proficiency in the ethical and legal standards of the counseling profession and counselor education.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications
A Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a CACREP-accredited program is required. ABD will be considered if the doctorate will be completed by August 1, 2026.
Additional Qualifications
- Licensed or license-eligible as a professional counselor (LPC) in Tennessee.
- Experience with advising, practicum, internship & clinical supervision.
- Background or expertise in clinical mental health counseling.
