Department Summary: The Department of Theatre at Bridgewater State University is committed to the artistic empowerment and educational invigoration of our students. Essential Duties: The Department of Theater Arts invites applications for a full-time, tenure track faculty position starting in September 2026. The faculty member will teach a 4/4 course load in upper level and lower level courses, including Core Curriculum courses, for our University’s diverse student population using a variety of appropriate teaching methods; meets all scheduled classes prepared to instruct; prepares teaching syllabi for courses of study; prepares materials to adequately evaluate student progress; reports midterm and final grades when appropriate; maintains accurate and adequate records; establishes regular office hours for student consultation, and formal and informal advising. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning and student success, with sensitivity to and understanding of students from backgrounds with a wide range of abilities and accommodations. Utilize an equity-minded framework to prepare lesson plans that incorporate varied instructional techniques, multi-media, and integration strategies designed to meet the educational and emotional needs of our students. Participate in and provide opportunities for all students in community service initiatives or projects that support a diverse and inclusive pedagogy, including but not limited to: honors projects and theses, advanced individual projects, directed studies, and student mentoring for Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival nominees. Collaborate with all colleagues to ensure proper alignment of related courses, including production related activities. Participate in advising students on academic curricula, serving on university and departmental committees, participate in faculty meetings, participate in the development of departmental curricula, and adhere to all institutional policies. The candidate may also perform other related duties as assigned and/or required, with opportunities to direct departmental theatre productions and/or mentor student directors and actors.
Required Qualifications: Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. Experience working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin, and physical and mental ability. Engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies; effectively assess student learning outcomes. Possess a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in related field by August 2026. Related professional theatre experience. Experience in theatre for young audiences and community engagement.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with department level assessment activities. Experience with recruitment and retention strategies. Familiarity with K-12 curriculum development for Theatre Education programs leading to preliminary licensure. Experience teaching undergraduate performance. History of directing undergraduate theatre productions.
