Description:
The Department of Information Science Technology (IST) in the
Cullen College of Engineering (CCE) at the University of Houston
(UH) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor
position in the Digital Media program to begin in Fall 2027.
We seek a colleague who will contribute to the continued growth of
our program and to the department's broader research strengths. The
successful candidate must demonstrate an outstanding scholarly
record, evidenced by high-impact peer-reviewed publications in
leading journals and conference proceedings, and a forward-looking
research agenda with the potential to secure competitive external
funding. We are particularly interested in candidates whose
research addresses artificial intelligence and machine learning,
human-computer/robot interaction, and/or big data and social media
analytics — including work that examines the design, development,
and societal implications of these technologies from the
perspectives of computer-mediated communication, user experience,
and human factors in computing.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field of engineering,
technology, or media conferred by the appointment start date. The
successful candidate will teach undergraduate (and, where
appropriate, graduate) courses related to their area of expertise,
which may include courses in AI and Machine Learning,
Human-Computer/Robot Interaction, Data Visualization, User
Experience Research, User Interface Design, Social Media
Applications and Analytics, and Computer-Mediated
Communication.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-track position on a
9-month appointment. Responsibilities include (1) a 2/2 teaching
load of undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to the Digital
Media program and the Information Science Technology department,
(2) an active program of independent research, and (3) service to
the program, department, and university.
Digital Media is a broad field that encompasses the creative
convergence of digital arts, science, technology, and business for
human expression, communication, social interaction, and education.
The DIGM curriculum emphasizes the “producer” and “strategist”
aspects of digital media alongside its technical and aesthetic
components, preparing graduates for high-demand roles across
industry. The Digital Media B.S. program, housed in the Information
Science Technology Department within the Cullen College of
Engineering, is a growing program with ~400 undergraduate students
and several production and research labs, including the UH UX Lab
and the CougAR Lab. Based at UH's Sugar Land campus, the program is
accredited by the Accrediting Council of Collegiate Graphic
Communications (ACCGC). The Cullen College of Engineering is
committed to expanding and advancing the quality of its engineering
and technology research programs as part of UH's standing as a
Carnegie Tier One Research university.
The University of Houston is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public
research university recognized with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter for
excellence in undergraduate education. UH serves the globally
competitive Houston and Gulf Coast region by providing world-class
faculty, experiential learning and strategic industry partnerships.
Located in the nation's fourth-largest city, UH enrolls nearly
49,000 students.
Applications should be submitted at http://www.uh.edu/human-resources/uh-careers/ and
include: (1) cover letter/letter of application; (2) curriculum
vitae; (3) research statement; (4) teaching philosophy or
statement; and (5) contact information for three professional
references (full letters upon request).
