Job Description

Under the direction of the Dean of Instruction, Liberal Arts, and working closely with the Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies department, this position is responsible for providing high-level classroom instruction to a diverse student population. This position is also responsible for working collaboratively with other faculty in the department and the college in our constant effort to support student success.

An ideal candidate would have a graduate degree in Asian American Studies or Ethnic Studies, or a closely related field. They should have college teaching experience, which can include dual enrollment classes, and should have demonstrated currency in the discipline as well as community involvement and activism work.

This position entails teaching introduction courses in Ethnic Studies, which can include Introduction to Ethnic Studies, Racial and Ethnic Justice Movements, Critical Thinking in Ethnic Studies, and Statistical Methods in Ethnic Studies. The position will be assigned a majority of the Introduction to Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies courses and will eventually be able to teach a new Filipinx Studies course that the department is currently developing. The candidate would have opportunities to work closely with learning communities and even help develop an APIDA learning community.

Most of the teaching assignments will be at the Pittsburg campus, but there will be opportunities to teach one or two classes at the Brentwood campus or to support dual enrollment efforts at the local high schools, especially at the sites most interested in offering the Introduction to Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies course. Teaching assignments may include a variety of modalities, including face-to-face, fully online and/or hybrid. There will be opportunities to develop curriculum, and a new Social Justice Studies ADT in Asian American Studies.

The Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies Department looks for a candidate that will also help develop additional courses and transfer degree programs, especially in the areas of Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Black Studies/Africana Studies/African American Studies, American Indian/Indigenous Studies, and Asian American, Asian Pacific Islander, and Oceanic Studies.

Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
  2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
  3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
  4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
  5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
  6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
  7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
  8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
  9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
  10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
  11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
  12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
  13. participating in Colleges shared governance processes.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience

Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty. Masters in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies OR Masters in Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Training or experience teaching in a variety of modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, and online) and developing curriculum and programs in Asian American, Asian Pacific Islander, and Oceanic Studies as well as collaborating with other Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Studies professors in the development of curriculum and programs.
  2. Experience in teaching courses that center knowledge about and knowledge produced by Indigenous /Native American, Black/Africana/African American, Asian American, Asian Pacific Islander, Oceanic, Chicano/a and Latino/a communities, which can include topics such as racism, racialization, ethnicity, equity, ethno-centrism, eurocentrism, white supremacy, agency, group affirmation, sovereignty, self-determination, liberation, decolonialization, anti-racism, and anti-colonialism.
  3. Training or experience in Ethnic Studies or Social Justice Studies STEM fields, especially regarding qualitative and quantitative (statistical) data gathering for communities of color.
  4. Training or experience as an instructor in gender, sexuality, and women of color feminist approaches to education, especially as it pertains to APIDA communities, as well as and developing Social Justice Studies curriculum and programs in collaboration with other Social Justice Studies professors.
  5. Training or experience working with learning communities, shared governance committees, or activism work within the Asian American, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian or Oceanic communities.

Salary

Initial salary placement for full-time, tenure track positions is based on academic degree(s), upper/graduate level units earned, teaching experience and/or qualifying related professional occupation experience which ranges from $68,136 to $112,848 per year (Up to $132k).
