Assistant Professor/Extension Specialist, Livestock

Assistant Professor/Extension Specialist, Livestock & Agricultural Marketing

The Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics in the College of Agriculture, Life Sciences, and Natural Resources seeks applications for a 9-month tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level in Livestock and Agricultural Marketing. The successful candidate will have a majority Extension appointment (60%). The remainder of the appointment will include research and could include teaching depending on candidate interests (exact job duties distribution is negotiable).

Livestock and agricultural production are central to Wyoming's economy, culture, and natural resource use. Wyoming and the Rocky Mountain West are home to some of the largest cattle and sheep operations in the United States, as well as innovative value-added enterprises and marketing systems that face rapidly evolving market conditions, consumer preferences, and policy environments. We seek an individual to develop an innovative applied research and Extension program that advances applied economic analysis of livestock and agricultural marketing, strengthens the Agriculture and Natural Resources focus area of UW Extension, and supports the economic vitality and resilience of Wyoming's agricultural producers and rural communities.

Key topic areas may include: livestock price analysis and market outlooks; agricultural risk management; value-added or niche marketing for Wyoming's primary livestock and crop products; supply chain and market access; integration of production economics with marketing decisions; and evaluation of national/international policies affecting Wyoming's livestock and agricultural markets.

The successful candidate will work with Extension agents around the state to engage with diverse stakeholders - including producers, agribusinesses, industry organizations, government agencies, and policymakers - to co-create solutions that enhance profitability, market access, and long-term sustainability. They will disseminate research results through scholarly journal articles, Extension publications, and presentations to academic, industry, and stakeholder audiences. The successful candidate is expected to secure external funding to support their program and to collaborate with faculty in Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, and Ecosystem Science and Management on interdisciplinary Extension and research projects.

This position offers significant opportunities to contribute to graduate education across the university. The successful candidate will mentor MS students in Agricultural and Applied Economics and serve on graduate thesis committees in related fields, including Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, and Ecosystem Science and Management. Teaching a course at the graduate or undergraduate level (in-person or online) is also a potential opportunity, depending on candidate interest and department needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Establishing a strong Extension and applied research program to support the livestock and agricultural marketing needs of state and local communities.

Supplemental Functions:

Provide service to support the governance of the Department, College, University, and Extension, and participate in appropriate professional societies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. by time of hire in Agricultural Economics, Economics, or closely related field.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest, coursework, experience, or focus in agricultural marketing, livestock economics, or highly related area.
  • Experience in applied economic analysis of agricultural markets, including price analysis, risk management, or value-added marketing.
  • Demonstrated potential to publish in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Excellent communication skills appropriate for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with agricultural producers, industry partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated potential to effectively collaborate on disciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.
